Data Scientist III - Financial Crimes Modeling

About the Role
TD is seeking a Data Scientist III to provide technical leadership across the Analytics function, with a focus on the US Financial Crime Risk Modeling & Advanced Analytics team. This role is crucial for developing, maintaining, and enhancing Anti-Money Laundering / Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) models and AI solutions. You will contribute to regulatory compliance, support global AML/CTF strategies, address emerging risks, and ensure alignment with industry best practices.
We are looking for a Data Science specialist to innovate, drive, and support initiatives in areas such as customer rating, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, emerging risk, model performance monitoring, analytics, and reporting.
Depth & Scope
- Accountable for significant business management areas with enterprise-wide impact.
- Acts as an enterprise or functional expert with deep specialized knowledge.
- Undertakes complex initiatives requiring seasoned specialist knowledge and cross-functional integration.
- Deals with senior/executive management.
- Works independently on analysis, design, and support of technical data management solutions.
- Focuses on longer-range planning (12+ months).
- Manages and prioritizes multiple projects.
Education & Experience
- Undergraduate or advanced technical degree preferred (e.g., math, physics, engineering, finance, computer science).
- Graduate degree preferred with 5+ years of relevant experience, or 3+ years with progressive project work experience.
- Higher degree education and research tenure can be counted.
Preferred Skills
- Proficient with Python or equivalent programming language and SQL.
- Experience in Financial Crimes / Compliance Risk Analytics is a plus.
- Experience in optimization, testing, and tuning of AML/CTF solutions, particularly transaction monitoring systems.
- Experience in machine learning model development, validation, and deployment.
- Experience with LLM-based solutions is a plus.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure) and modern data stack tools is a plus.
Customer Accountabilities
- Collaborate closely with business owners to identify opportunities and act as a data science ambassador.
- Translate business problems into viable data science solutions, understanding business context and data infrastructure.
- Utilize a wide range of programming languages and techniques for data extraction, preparation, and advanced analytics to derive insights from big data.
- Visualize data insights to effectively communicate findings to decision-makers and stakeholders at all technical levels.
- Partner with data analysts, software engineers, data engineers, and application developers to create scalable and sustainable data science solutions.

- Provide analytical thought leadership and stay current with data mining and data science advancements.
- Propose improvements to business processes through data insights to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
- Educate the organization on hypothesis testing and statistical validation.
- Facilitate understanding of the principles and mathematics behind scientific processes to drive organizational alignment.
- Translate current information into continuous improvement activities for enhanced performance.
- Adhere to enterprise frameworks and methodologies.
- Ensure programs and policies meet business needs, comply with requirements, and align with priorities.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives as a subject matter expert, identifying risks and providing guidance.
- Monitor service, productivity, and assess efficiency levels, implementing improvements.
- Lead or facilitate action plans to address performance, risk, or governance issues.
- Manage relationships across business lines and functions to ensure alignment with enterprise and regulatory requirements.
- Stay informed about emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a culture of risk management and control.

Physical Requirements
This role involves predominantly sedentary work, requiring continuous concentration, multitasking, and the use of standard office equipment. Occasional travel, responding quickly to sounds, standing, walking, squatting, bending, and reaching forward may be required. Physical demands are generally minimal.
