Swyfft relies heavily on its data infrastructure, managing multi-terabyte transactional and analytical databases that drive instant quoting, binding, and claims servicing. We are looking for a seasoned Senior Database Administrator to support our Director of Database Services in maintaining the health, performance, security, and reliability of our database estate. This role involves hands-on work with SQL Server (on-premises and Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS), including query tuning, data safeguarding, backup and recovery management, and ensuring the smooth operation of ETL pipelines. This is a highly technical position for individuals passionate about the data tier. Note: Sponsorship is not available for this position. This is a 100% remote, U.S.-based opportunity. Eligible states include: AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. Occasional travel for team meetings and training may be required.Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain multi-terabyte databases across SQL Server (on-premises and Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS) platforms.
- Own and manage backup, restore, and recovery processes; design, automate, and test backups to meet RPO/RTO targets, and lead recovery efforts.
- Monitor and tune database and query performance, diagnosing and resolving bottlenecks, blocking, and indexing issues for high-volume workloads.
- Implement and maintain database security and data privacy controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing, adhering to regulatory obligations.
- Design, build, and maintain SSIS ETL packages and other data integration workflows.
- Manage high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Always On availability groups, failover groups, geo-replication) and collaborate with development teams on schema design, query optimization, and safe database change deployments.
The Successful Candidate
- Possesses deep, hands-on expertise in administering production SQL Server at scale, including very large (multi-terabyte) databases.
- Has strong working knowledge of Azure SQL (PaaS) and the broader Azure data platform, comfortable with both PaaS and IaaS/on-premises models.
- Demonstrates mastery of performance tuning, execution plans, indexing strategy, wait statistics, and query optimization.
- Exhibits solid command of backup/recovery, high availability, disaster recovery design and testing, and database security/data privacy practices.
- Is self-directed, dependable, and capable of owning critical systems with minimal oversight, serving as a credible second to the Director of Database Services.
Some Requirements
- 8+ years of hands-on database administration experience, with significant time managing large-scale, production SQL Server environments.
- Strong T-SQL skills and demonstrated experience with Azure SQL, SSIS, and database security and privacy controls.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Relevant Microsoft data platform certifications (e.g., Azure Database Administrator Associate) are a plus.
Computer Skills
- Experience with MS Office suite.
- Proficiency using video and chat technology (MS Teams & Slack).

Compensation and Benefits
The typical base pay range for this role is dependent on the candidate’s location and experience level. Actual compensation may vary based on skills, qualifications, and experience. The provided range is a good-faith estimate and does not include potential bonuses or other incentives.
