Human Resources Assistant at SUNY Maritime College

SUNY Maritime College is seeking a dynamic and customer-focused Human Resources Assistant to join their team in Bronx, NY. This full-time position plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Human Resources Services office, ensuring adherence to all applicable policies, regulations, and guidelines.

Position Duties, Responsibilities, and Competencies:

  • Responsible for the talent acquisition and recruitment process, including advertising positions.
  • Conduct employee onboarding and assist in organizing training & development initiatives.
  • Organize and lead workshops and trainings on recruitment, diversity, and other HR-related topics.
  • Provide comprehensive support to employees on various HR matters, including appointments and compensation, resolving any arising issues.
  • Assist employees and managers in interpreting and applying employment laws and labor relations policies.
  • Represent SUNY Maritime College at agency-wide meetings, conferences, and trainings.
  • Ensure strict compliance with labor regulations, including OFCCP, Dept. of Civil Service, etc.
  • Serve on various committees as needed.
  • Review and process appointments and additional pay components (e.g., extra service, also receives).
  • Assist in preparing and processing reports such as Affirmative Action reporting, institutional data, salary analysis, compensation and payroll information, appointment data, and departmental budget information.
  • Analyze metrics and report trends to inform HR strategies.
  • Stay informed about employee matters and develop programs to foster positive employee morale.
  • Promote open communication and a positive work environment aligned with the College's vision and values.
  • Act as a backup to the Payroll Benefits & Comp Administrator for compensation and benefit plans.
  • Assist with documentation for EEO complaints, Division of Human Rights complaints, ADA complaints, and responses for the Ethics Commission.
  • Input information into various HR systems including NYBEAS, NYSTEP, Payserv, SUNY HR, ELMS/reemployment roster, and TAS.
  • Manage criminal background screenings for new hires.
  • Administer temporary staffing requests through OGS State Contracts.
  • Support the HR team with Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provisions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in HR Management or a related discipline.
  • 3-4 years of experience as an HR Generalist, or expertise in talent acquisition, employee relations, onboarding, compliance, and HR administrative support.
  • Practical knowledge of HR business practices.
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficient in comprehension, writing, and mathematical abilities.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must maintain extreme confidentiality of employee records.
  • 1-2 years of experience presenting to broad audiences and facilitating training.
  • Strong analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior HR experience in the public sector.
  • Knowledge of HRIS systems.
  • Prior experience within SUNY, other academic environments, or New York State agencies.

Additional Information:

  • Classification/Salary Range: This is a full-time calendar year appointment.
  • Management/Confidential unclassified position serving at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
  • Anticipated salary range: $57,000 to $68,000 annually, with outstanding benefits.
