Job Summary

The Project Engineer is the technical source of information for the project and should have a thorough knowledge of the construction documents, subcontracts, and purchase orders. This role responds to questions about drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and change orders. It involves maintaining an effective and professional working relationship with owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers. The Project Engineer may also assist with the supervision and/or training of Field Engineers. This position includes three 'steps' (I, II, and Senior), which provide for a progression of skill and experience. Step I is the entry level for individuals with a minimum of experience in this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the components of the project management plan (PMP) including scope management, procurement, environmental, time management, financial, quality management, safety plans, and risk management.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of the change management process and develops a procurement schedule integrated with the project CPM schedule.
  • Procures necessary material and equipment, coordinates and reviews submittals for compliance with contract documents.
  • Administers budgeting and cost control processes to ensure projects are completed within budget.
  • Maintains "As-built" contract documents and compiles close-out requirements such as operation and maintenance manuals and warranties.
  • May participate in concrete form design, related equipment selection, and takeoffs for concrete, asphalt concrete, earthwork, and utilities.
  • Plans, acquires, develops, and supervises project team members to ensure project execution.
  • Prepares and maintains quantity reporting, coordinates meeting agendas, and prepares meeting minutes, while maintaining project logs.
  • Prepares and reviews change orders, including time extensions, and maintains the change order log, distributing executed change orders as required.
  • Prepares cost control budget adjustments and executes them in a timely manner.
  • Prevents claims, identifies potential claims, quantifies, and mitigates/resolves the effects of claims on a timely basis.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • An advanced knowledge of construction engineering technology, codes, standards, and the interdependence of functional units is required.
  • A four-year construction-related degree or equivalent technical training and related experience, plus a minimum of three to four years of similar construction engineering experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, plus a demonstrated ability to manage a team of varied disciplines.
  • Skill/ability to supervise and/or train Field Engineer positions if required.
