About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Full Stack Staff Engineer to join Stripe’s Identity team. This team is at the forefront of building trusted, scalable, and innovative identity verification systems that serve millions of verifications each month. As a key technical leader, you will own the architectural vision and technical strategy for Stripe’s core identity infrastructure, including the Identity Store, fraud detection systems, and verification platforms. Your role involves shaping the future of identity verification technology, making critical build-vs-buy decisions, and leading the development of new platform capabilities that support Stripe’s broader ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including machine learning, product management, legal, and engineering to ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and scalable. This is an opportunity to influence the technical direction of a high-stakes product that directly impacts millions of users and helps prevent fraud and ensure regulatory compliance globally.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in strategic technical leadership roles
- Proven experience leading engineering teams on API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries
- Strong track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that drive business growth
- Ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience working with multiple programming languages such as Ruby, TypeScript, Python, Scala, Java, Go, and SQL
- Familiarity with software infrastructure tools like MongoDB, Splunk, Prometheus, Kafka, Temporal, and Protobuf
- Demonstrated ability to operate with ownership, ensuring system reliability, security, and scalability
- Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and a growth mindset
- Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and foster psychological safety
Preferred qualifications include experience with identity verification, fraud detection, adversarial ML systems, and building platform products with multiple consumer types. Experience with ML production systems, real-time data pipelines, and navigating ambiguity in fast-paced environments is also highly valued.
Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical strategy for Stripe’s core identity systems, including architecture and technical risk management
- Lead the development of new platform systems such as the Identity Store, networked identity infrastructure, and advanced fraud detection pipelines
- Drive the evolution from a hosted-UI product to a headless API platform with embedded components
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align on product roadmap, resource planning, and technical priorities
- Set engineering standards across ML, backend, mobile, and front-end development, including design reviews and mentorship
- Ensure system reliability, security, and observability, proactively identifying and mitigating risks such as model drift and fraud pattern shifts
- Mentor senior engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence and ownership
- Make data-driven decisions to balance build-vs-buy strategies and surface technical risks early
