About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to join our Aikyam Cloud Identity Platform team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and developing secure, scalable, and highly available backend services that facilitate identity and access management for millions of users within Optum and UnitedHealth Group. You will lead architectural initiatives, develop microservices using Java Spring Boot, and implement industry-standard protocols such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and SAML 2.0. Your expertise will help us build robust authentication and authorization pipelines, ensuring compliance with security best practices. This position offers the flexibility to work remotely within the United States, with specific in-office requirements for candidates in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering with Java and Spring Boot (Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data)
- 3+ years of experience with OAuth 2.0 / OIDC / SAML 2.0 protocols and identity platform development
- 3+ years of experience designing and operating microservices on AWS (EKS, ALB, SES/SNS, Secrets Manager, ECR)
- 3+ years of experience with Redis (caching, session management, key-pattern design)
- 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and/or GitHub Actions, including Docker and Kubernetes/Helm deployments
- 3+ years of experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and schema migration tools like Liquibase or Flyway
- 2+ years of experience with JWT / JOSE standards (JWS, JWE, JWK)
- Proven leadership in technical design and mentoring engineering teams
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
- Strong understanding of security best practices and cryptographic standards
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Java Spring Boot microservices implementing OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and SAML 2.0 protocols for the identity platform on AWS
- Build and enhance OpenID Connect (OIDC) implementations, including authorization code, client credentials, and token exchange flows
- Implement shared libraries and components used across multiple platform services to promote code reuse and consistency
- Design multi-tenant data models and tenant-scoped configurations, managing tenant lifecycle via database and Redis cache
- Develop REST APIs following clean code and domain-driven design principles, ensuring robust exception handling and error management
- Write comprehensive unit and integration tests using JUnit 5, Mockito, and Spring Boot Test frameworks
- Collaborate with Quality Engineers to develop and update automated testing strategies
- Lead code reviews, promote engineering best practices, and ensure code quality standards are met
- Implement and secure token issuance and validation pipelines using JOSE standards (JWT, JWE, JWS)
- Apply OAuth 2.0 / OIDC security practices, including PKCE, token binding, scope enforcement, and session management
- Coordinate with security teams to maintain cryptographic standards and key management protocols
- Manage database schema migrations and maintain backward compatibility during updates
- Drive testing strategies encompassing unit, integration, and contract testing to ensure rapid and reliable releases
- Lead architectural design discussions and produce technical documentation and architecture decision records (ADRs)
- Participate actively in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, reviews, and retrospectives
- Work cross-functionally with product managers, security architects, QA, SREs, and business stakeholders to align on requirements and priorities
- Stay informed about industry trends in identity standards, cloud-native architecture, and Java ecosystem developments
