Job Description
Product Counsel, Payments at Stripe
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About The Team
Stripe’s Product Legal team is responsible for managing the legal and regulatory elements of the design, build and execution of our products and services. We work on some of the hardest technical, commercial, and regulatory problems around, and we’re looking for a product lawyer to join our team. In this role you will be a key advisor to Stripe’s product, engineering and partnerships teams, and will work on a diverse set of matters that straddle financial services, business processes, and technology.
What you’ll do
The ideal candidate is passionate about Stripe’s mission of helping businesses grow and thrive. We’re looking for someone who is a team player and willing to jump in on tasks of any size. Stripe operates within a complex and interwoven legal, regulatory, and financial partnership environment around the world.
We’re looking for someone with experience counseling businesses regarding payments, financial services, and financial regulations. The ideal candidate would also be comfortable drafting and negotiating financial partner agreements involving highly regulated, often complicated products. Some experience with APAC-based legal issues and workstreams is a huge plus.
This role can be based in the United States or Canada.
Responsibilities
- Counsel Stripe product and partnerships teams on a range of issues including payments regulations (including for money transmission or e-money), financial partnerships, payment schemes rules, data privacy, marketing, and monetization
- Collaborate with Stripe teams, including product, partnerships, engineering, compliance, marketing, and risk on product development and commercialization
- Support the drafting and negotiation of key deals with Stripe’s financial partners
- Work closely with colleagues across Stripe’s legal team to support Stripe’s regulatory structure, scheme rule compliance, customer agreements, and financial partnerships
- Help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products
- Draft, review, and update foundational documents for Stripe’s payments products
- Stay up-to-date, with the support of Stripe’s legal team, on US and international laws and regulations dealing with payments, financial services, data privacy, and marketing
- Participate as a proactive business partner to senior leaders and build relationships as a trusted advisor
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team and/or government agency working with financial institutions or financial technology companies on product legal matters and financial partner negotiations
- A juris doctorate degree
- Experience counseling product teams, technical teams, and other non-lawyers on product development and deal structure
- A passion for technology and ability to understand complex business models and product use cases quickly
- An entrepreneurial spirit – a self-starter and self-learner who thrives in a fast paced environment, deals well with ambiguity and focuses on driving impact
- Excellent judgement and capable of making smart decisions with imperfect information
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Excellent project management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines
Working remotely at Stripe
A remote location is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently live or plan to live.
Pay and benefits
The annual US base salary range for this role is $178,200 - $267,200. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
