Job Description

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, helping millions of companies worldwide accept payments, grow revenue, and accelerate new opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, offering an unprecedented opportunity to impact the global economy.

About The Team

The Web Presence and Platform team, or WPP, creates and powers Stripe’s public-facing websites, including stripe.com. This team is split into two pillars: Presence, focusing on industry-leading designs and educational content, and Platform, building the internal machinery for fast, stable, and easy-to-update websites. Together, we make the first impression of Stripe count, ensuring every pixel is enthralling and systematically beneficial.

What you’ll do

As a Design Engineer, Expansion, you will conceptualize, prototype, and build new web experiences, focusing on illustrating the value of Stripe’s products. This involves crafting interactive experiences and animations that simplify complex topics, such as those found on stripe.com/checkout. You will consistently prioritize in-browser performance, SEO, discoverability, and accessibility, utilizing existing components and creating new ones for broader consumption.

While all WPP Design Engineers share a commitment to user experience and craft, the Expansion pod specifically focuses on attracting new prospects and driving conversion. You will reimagine user experience moments in acquisition journeys and build delightful, original interactive tools and resources. This role requires deep collaboration across design, engineering, and cross-functional teams, working across various tech stacks to develop new site capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with designers and partners to prototype, implement, and maintain dynamic interactive tools and experiences.
  • Work closely with other design engineers, fostering a culture of excellence through pairing and mentoring.
  • Maintain and extend Stripe’s design systems.
  • Build high-polish web pages that adhere to stringent standards for SEO, accessibility, and performance.

Who you are

We encourage applications from candidates who meet the minimum requirements, with preferred qualifications being a bonus.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant web front-end development or creative technology experience at a tech-forward, product-driven company.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern HTML and CSS.
  • Experience writing clear, elegant code in a team environment.
  • A passion for the web as a storytelling medium, demonstrated through a portfolio showcasing design systems, engaging microsites, Figma plugins, webGL experiments, CSS art, or similar creative work.
  • Experience designing and building public-facing websites that perform elegantly across various browsers and devices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong understanding of the formal elements of design, including typography, layout, balance, and proportion.
  • Experience building highly complex interactive tools, including state management and data fetching.
  • Proficiency with React, with an emphasis on interactions, animation, performance, and polish.
  • Experience with A/B testing, synthetic monitoring, or accessibility testing.

Hybrid work at Stripe

This role offers flexibility, available either in an office or a remote location (35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

  • In-office expectations: Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time monthly in their local office or with users, balancing collaboration and flexibility.
  • Working remotely at Stripe: Remote locations are 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from a Stripe office. While you can visit an office for team meetings, the expectation is regular work from home. Relocation costs to a remote location are not covered.

Pay and benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $146,400 - $219,600. This range may cover several career levels and will be refined during the interview process based on experience, qualifications, and location. Non-US applicants can inquire about salary ranges during interviews. Additional benefits may include equity, company bonus, 401(k) plan, medical, dental, vision benefits, and wellness stipends.
