Assistant Professors ensure high-quality educational experiences aligned with course outcomes, HLC, and program accreditation standards, focusing on impactful, inclusive learning outcomes. Upholding the scholarly-practitioner model, continuous learning through scholarly activities or professional practice is highly valued.

Key responsibilities for the Assistant Professor, Master of Science in Nursing - Nurse Practitioner include online teaching, graduate-level mentorship and committee work, and contributions to curriculum development. Faculty also engage in school governance through committees and may participate in various other university activities based on organizational needs and individual expertise.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor, Master of Science in Nursing - Nurse Practitioner role encompasses several critical areas:

  • Teaching and Instruction: Highly engaged in online courses and residencies, consistently exceeding faculty expectations. Utilizes course data for continuous improvement and contributes to course refinement.
  • Doctoral Mentoring: Proficient in dissertation and doctoral capstone processes, effectively guiding learners and chairing/serving on doctoral committees. Facilitates interactive course-rooms for timely completion.
  • Curriculum and Course Development: Collaborates with cross-functional partners to plan and deliver high-quality curriculum, designing and improving course materials, objectives, assessments, and ensuring diversity and inclusiveness.
  • School and University Governance: Demonstrates leadership in school and university committees, driving positive impact and serving as a peer mentor.
  • Professional Service and Practice: Contributes professional knowledge to local communities and professional networks, representing the “Capella Brand.”
  • Research and Scholarship: Stays current in scholarly fields, demonstrating expertise through writing, speaking, and conference attendance, meeting external accreditor requirements.
  • Leadership through Team Engagement: Takes on essential roles, contributing innovative ideas, and adapting to immediate needs. This includes participation in meetings, commencement, residencies, faculty development, problem resolution, and faculty mentoring.

Some Assistant Professors may have specific “areas of emphasis” requiring greater leadership, such as Learner Management, Research and Advising, Program Development, Field Education, Accreditation, or B2B partnerships. Specific assignments are based on school needs and faculty capabilities to ensure optimal contribution to teaching and learner support.

  • Assumes leadership roles in professional organizations and advocates for the profession.
  • Shares knowledge with the public and volunteers expertise in community events.
Governance And Leadership:
  • Actively participates in program, department, school, or university committees.
  • Engages in faculty staff meetings, development events, and shares best practices.
  • Serves as SMEs in course/program development and supports accreditation.
  • Identifies and manages curriculum content quality and currency.
  • Takes on challenging projects to support learner success.
  • Provides mentorship, feedback, and guidance to other faculty members.

Performance Criteria

Satisfactory performance in teaching and/or mentoring, based on university faculty expectations, will be reviewed annually.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical practice as a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner is required.
  • Experience teaching in higher education required.
  • Experience working remotely with teams required.
  • Experience working with leadership to enhance student learning and program support required.
  • Evidence of supporting learner success and a commitment to quality teaching outcomes required.
  • Ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community required.
  • Experience with scholarly writing and use of APA required.
  • Two or more years teaching in an online setting preferred.
  • Experience teaching MSN NP in higher education preferred.
  • Experience with curriculum development preferred.

Education

All degrees must be conferred and from a regionally accredited institution. Copies of required certificates and licenses and unofficial transcripts for all graduate degrees with the institution and conferred degree and date must be attached.

  • Doctorate required.
  • Earned degree as a Nurse Practitioner (MSN or Doctoral) required.
  • Degree commensurate with requirements for program level to teach required.

Certifications, licenses, and registrations

  • Current and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of residence required.
  • Current and unencumbered Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in state of residence required.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) dual national certification (AANP or ANCC) required.
  • Eligible to obtain RN and APRN license in MN and other states as required.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel occasionally (5 – 10%) for roles such as Capella Faculty.
  • Ability to work onsite in Corporate or Campus location may be required based on role.
  • If offsite or hybrid, access to a suitable remote work setting (privacy, internet, phone, video conference) is essential.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
  • Must be able to meet critical thinking and problem-solving aspects and communicate effectively.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected starting pay for this Assistant Professor, Master of Science in Nursing - Nurse Practitioner position is between $94,000.00 - $96,000.00. The broader salary range for this position is $82,800.00 - $124,200.00, with actual base pay varying based on factors like knowledge, skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal pay equity.
