Responsibilities

State Farm's Rating & Underwriting Modeling Team is expanding, seeking Data Scientists to develop advanced analytic solutions. You will partner with business areas to drive enterprise results through the creation and implementation of these solutions. This role supports the Property & Casualty Actuarial & Underwriting Modeling Department (PCM), developing models for insurance pricing and underwriting decisions.

Data Science at State Farm:

As a Data Scientist, you will act as a subject matter expert and consultant, promoting the use of analytics in decision-making across the organization. Your daily tasks may include:

  • Developing and validating advanced analytic models.
  • Building and providing input for datasets to support model development.
  • Collaborating on solution scoping and project decisions.
  • Presenting technical topics to diverse audiences, including leadership and non-technical partners.
  • Leading and mentoring other Data Scientists, interns, and technical teams.
  • Making strategic recommendations for data collection, integration, and retention.
  • Serving as a peer reviewer for other model development teams.
  • Tackling complex problems of varied scope.
  • Building and leveraging a network of associates with domain and data expertise.
  • Fostering a business-oriented mindset to guide the data science and research agenda.
  • Contributing to the open-source community through software initiatives.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree or higher in an analytical field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, economics, data science, quantitative marketing, operations research, industrial engineering).
  • Experience building advanced analytic models using generalized linear models and at least one of the following: time series analysis, cluster analysis, tree-based algorithms, or neural networks.
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical programming language: SAS, R, or Python.

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS), Linux, and/or SQL.
  • Strong communication skills and experience managing diverse stakeholders.

State Farm prioritizes work-life balance with a standard 38:45-hour work week. The potential starting salary range is $102,000 - $163,000, with adjustments based on skills and experience. Additional yearly incentive pay of up to 15% is possible.
