Job Description

Platform Product Manager, Banking Services at Square

Since its inception in 2009, Square has significantly evolved alongside the world of commerce. Initially enabling effortless payments, Square expanded into integrated, omnichannel software solutions to empower sellers with online sales, inventory management, 'buy now, pay later' functionality (via Afterpay), appointment booking, customer engagement, and payroll services. Financial services tools are embedded directly at the point of sale, offering merchants access to business loans and cash flow management in one centralized location. Afterpay further enhances Square's goal of providing comprehensive tools that drive value and growth, helping sellers attract the next generation of shoppers, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale. Square partners with sellers of all sizes, from nascent businesses to large enterprise operations, with solutions growing in tandem with their needs. The company is committed to building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, globally assisting sellers in their growth journeys.

The Role

The Block Financial Platform is designed to enable teams across the Block ecosystem to rapidly build and reliably scale innovative financial products that foster access to the global economy. This is achieved through a composable, resilient, and performant financial platform.

The Banking Services domain within Block Financial Platform specifically manages connections and rails into traditional banking infrastructure across 8 countries. This includes payment rails such as ACH, wires, check deposits, and instant transfer methods, as well as core bank account linkage, verification, and authorization functions. The goal is to establish a single, centralized banking stack that efficiently, resiliently, and speedily serves multiple Block products at scale.

Square is seeking a Platform Product Manager to join the Banking Services team within the Block Financial Platform. In this role, you will be responsible for a portfolio of platform capabilities that drive bank account lifecycles and money movement across various products. A key focus will be on ensuring reliability, adherence to regulatory compliance (e.g., NACHA and other local schemes), optimizing end-user experience, and enabling new products for Cash App and Square.

You Will

  • Run your product like a business: help define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for one or more Banking Services domains (e.g., bank account linking, ACH and local bank transfers), grounded in clear objectives, metrics, and the needs of our brand product teams and end customers.
  • Partner cross-functionally, with engineering, financial operations, risk, compliance, treasury and multiple partner product teams at Block to define roadmaps and deliver platform capabilities that are reusable, compliant, and scalable across Block.
  • Own the end‑to‑end lifecycle for your capabilities — from opportunity discovery and requirements definition through launch, adoption, and ongoing optimization — balancing new feature delivery with reliability, tech debt, and regulatory work.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to design resilient architectures for critical banking flows, ensuring we can keep money moving even in the face of partner outages, regional incidents, or internal failures.
  • Deeply understand financial and regulatory constraints (e.g., NACHA rules, safeguarding requirements, open banking / 1033 obligations) and translate them into product and platform requirements that keep Block compliant while enabling great customer experiences.
  • Drive cross‑functional programs that may span multiple Block brands (Cash App, Square, Afterpay), and functions (financial operations, risk, compliance, treasury), aligning priorities, sequencing work, and clearly communicating progress and trade‑offs.
  • Use data to improve platform performance: own KPIs and OKRs for your product domain (e.g., success rates, GPV, return rates, latency, cost efficiency), instrument the platform to measure them, and feed insights back into your roadmap and prioritization.
  • Contribute to our operating model by bringing clarity to charters, JTBDs, and SLOs for your area, and by helping improve shared planning and prioritization processes across Block Financial Platform.

You Have

  • 5+ years of product management experience or equivalent, including experience shipping complex, backend or platform products at scale.
  • Experience in at least one of: payments, banking, financial platforms, or highly regulated infrastructure, with a desire to go deep on bank transfers and global money movement.
  • A system‑thinking mindset and technical fluency that allow you to work closely with senior engineers, understand service architectures, and translate product goals into pragmatic technical requirements and trade‑offs.
  • Ability to prioritize ruthlessly across KLO / run‑the‑business work, strategic platform investments, and new product enablement, using data and clear frameworks to make and communicate trade‑offs.
  • Highly preferred: Experience working in a high growth B2B or B2C FinTech or Finance business.
  • A collaborative, low‑ego working style with a track record of building strong partnerships across engineering, operations, finance/treasury, compliance, risk and partner product teams — especially in matrixed organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex technical and regulatory topics for diverse audiences and to drive alignment with senior stakeholders across Block.
  • An analytical and metrics‑driven approach to decision‑making; you are comfortable defining KPIs, digging into dashboards, and using both quantitative and qualitative insights to guide your roadmap.
  • Curiosity, ownership, and a bias for action — you are excited by ambiguity, move quickly while bringing others along, and care deeply about building resilient, long-lived financial infrastructure that earns our customers’ trust.
