Job Description

About Spark NZ

As New Zealand's largest telecommunications and digital services company, Spark's purpose is to help all of New Zealand win big in a digital world. We provide mobile, broadband, and digital services to millions of New Zealanders and thousands of New Zealand businesses. We operate in an exciting and constantly evolving industry, where the pace of change brings new and unique challenges every day, so we operate using Agile ways of working to allow us to meet the fast-changing needs of our customers. Agile replaces the traditional hierarchical organisational structure to produce a transparent, collaborative environment with highly productive teams who are empowered to deliver better outcomes for our customers, communities, and all of New Zealand.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced professional with expertise in both fraud analysis and investigation to join our Fraud Services team based in Auckland. The team is part of the Risk, Internal Audit and Fraud team within the Group Finance Centre of Excellence. This role suits someone who enjoys combining investigation skills with data-led thinking to detect, understand, and respond to fraud risks in a fast-moving telecommunications environment. You’ll be analytical, curious and pragmatic—able to spot patterns in large data sets, form and test hypotheses, and translate findings into effective responses that prevent future harm as well as resolve individual cases.

Day to day you will be involved in:

  • Manage day-to-day operational responses to reported fraud events, including triage, containment, and case management;
  • Leverage SQL to analyse large and complex data sets, identifying fraud trends, anomalies, and control weaknesses, and providing actionable recommendations;
  • Develop and refine fraud detection and monitoring approaches (rules, alerts, reporting) to support prevention and early intervention;
  • Partner with colleagues across the business to provide advice, agree pragmatic controls, and deliver response activities relating to fraud risks and events;
  • Undertake detailed investigations into any fraud events;
  • Undertake proactive audits to identify fraud or breaches of control frameworks;
  • Liaise with law enforcement and regulatory agencies when required, including preparation of high-quality evidential material;
  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of current scams impacting customers and employees;
  • Input into collation of quarterly reporting.

What experience you'll bring?

  • Degree or equivalent qualification attainment of industry related qualifications or certification;
  • Sound understanding of investigation principles and their application, with the ability to build defensible, evidence-based case files;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including confidence working with large data sets to identify patterns, test hypotheses, and quantify impact;
  • Ability to write and interpret SQL queries to extract insights (experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms is desirable);
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate at all levels of organisations;
  • Proficiency across Microsoft 365 tools we use day-to-day (e.g., Excel, Teams, Co-Pilot and Power BI), giving the ability to confidently present insights to stakeholders;
  • Experience in working in an Agile environment or ability to learn Agile Ways of Working quickly.
