Job Description
About Solace
Healthcare in the U.S. is fundamentally broken, with 88% of adults lacking the health literacy to navigate it. Solace cuts through this complexity by pairing patients with expert advocates and providing tools for better decision-making and outcomes. We are a Series C startup, founded in 2022, backed by prominent investors like Inspired Capital, Craft Ventures, Torch Capital, Menlo Ventures, Signalfire, and IVP. Our lean, mission-driven U.S. based team is growing rapidly.
Solace is not for coasting; we're here to redefine healthcare, demanding urgency, precision, and heart. If you seek to challenge yourself, sharpen your skills, and perform your best work alongside a deeply caring team, you're in the right place. We embrace intensity.
About The Role: Technical Lead, Engineering
As a Technical Lead, Engineering, you will join a spectacularly talented engineering team, helping to strengthen their collective force. Your time will be split between writing production code and elevating your team through mentorship, technical guidance, and direct management. You are expected to move aggressively, commit code regularly, and see your work with live users, while simultaneously unblocking your team, reviewing their code, and fostering their growth.
You are a seasoned engineer capable of identifying problems, architecting high-quality solutions, and teaching others to do the same. You are curious, enjoy ambiguous problems with undefined solutions, and take pride in your craft. You possess impeccable communication skills and absorb feedback exceptionally well. You are not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them, creating an environment where your team can do the same. Above all, you thrive on ownership and are stifled by large organizations.
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership
- Analyze product requirements and produce high-quality, production-ready code, creating a best-in-class user experience.
- Build and maintain new user-facing features, from database models to UI components.
- Own the technical architecture for major initiatives and guide the team through complex technical decisions.
- Create services and APIs to drive existing and new features for web applications.
- Maintain system and codebase health, refactor and improve, ensuring robustness and resilience.
- Write clear specifications to ensure product and code quality for stress-free deployment.
- Drive large releases to production on a continuous deployment cadence.
- Set technical standards for code quality, testing, and engineering excellence.
People Leadership
- Directly manage 2-6 engineers, conducting 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations.
- Mentor engineers on technical growth, code quality, and problem-solving through pairing sessions and thoughtful code reviews.
- Unblock your team, whether facing technical challenges, process bottlenecks, or cross-functional coordination issues.
- Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement within your team.
- Participate in hiring: interview candidates, assess technical skills, and help build a world-class engineering team.
- Work with product and design partners to translate vision into executable technical plans for your team.
What You Bring To The Table
- 7+ years of relevant experience in both frontend and backend development, with a proven track record of shipping high-impact products.
- Experience leading, mentoring, or managing engineers, formally or informally, with a history of helping others level up.
- Strong React fundamentals and a background working with Typescript/Node.
- Intuitive understanding of creating delightful, consumer-oriented experiences.
- Experience in a startup environment, wearing multiple hats and moving fast.
- Exceptional communication skills for influencing product direction, aligning stakeholders, and delivering impactful feedback.
- Extreme bias toward action and execution; you are driven to write code, improve the codebase, enhance systems, or help your team do so.
- Ability to balance hands-on technical work with people management, thriving in both modes.
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to create structure where none exists.
