Job Description
About The Role
We’re looking for curious, resourceful, and detail-oriented individuals who can solve problems quickly, tackle unscoped problems and translate them into repeatable solutions, and set the pace to go faster for Shopify’s Privacy Compliance team.
As a Staff Technical Privacy Analyst, you’ll apply both your technical systems and privacy expertise to deeply understand and manage privacy risks. You’ll independently read code and technical documents to verify how our systems operate, and own critical privacy issues and decisions from identification to mitigation, working alongside other teams.
This role will provide an opportunity to:
- Trailblaze Shopify's path to addressing emerging privacy risks and represent privacy compliance to influence cross-company strategic aims across Shopify’s entire stack
- Research new privacy enhancing technologies and how they could be used to improve Shopify’s privacy program
- Collaborate with product, engineering, data, legal, and security teams to investigate potential privacy issues and recommend solutions
- Utilize data and key metrics to understand, communicate, and drive Shopify’s privacy program
- Mentor teammates, raise the bar, inspire your subdiscipline, and develop privacy best practices
Qualifications
We need people with experience in the following areas:
- Reflexive use of AI to accelerate work and solve technical problems
- Working with privacy regulations including GDPR and CCPA
- Building and maintaining controls and safeguards to simplify privacy practices
- Expertise in cookie compliance and consent management
- Reviewing and meticulously documenting technical guidelines, following and improving team playbooks, and being self-reliant to create the canonical answers for compliance
It would be great if you had experience in one or more of the following (don’t stress, we are not expecting experience in all of the following!):
- Cloud technologies, containerized environments, and infrastructure as code
- Writing software, preferably Ruby on Rails
- Big data technologies like Spark, Flink, DBT, and BigQuery
- Information security fundamentals, privacy and compliance standards
- Creating and maintaining trusted relationships
- Preparing and delivering technical presentations
About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.
This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.
About You
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
Before you apply, consider if you can:
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they're built for, and focus on the work only humans can do
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
We may use AI-enabled tools to screen, select, and assess applications. All AI outputs are reviewed and validated by our recruitment team.
