Job Description

Sr. Manager, Account Security at Shopify

The Sr. Manager, Account Security role at Shopify involves protecting the platform and its merchants from various account-related threats, ensuring secure access and fostering a proactive security posture. The Account Security team safeguards Shopify's platform and merchants from account takeovers, phishing, abuse, and emerging threats. This team is responsible for restoring account access for the right individuals at the appropriate time, managing sensitive information changes, validating accountholder details, and promptly responding to security incidents. They also develop and operate systems designed to detect, investigate, and prevent threats, all while ensuring minimal friction for legitimate users.

Members of this team directly assist Shopify merchants facing account access issues or needing to secure their stores from potential account takeovers. This role requires a customer service-oriented individual with strong communication skills, high engagement, and a drive for results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing, globally distributed team of account security specialists.
  • Own strategy, execution, and key metrics for your function, balancing robust security with a seamless user experience and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure swift, accurate verification and restoration of access for merchants, minimizing operational downtime.
  • Help Shopify build capabilities that enable merchants to self-serve and improve their security hygiene practices.
  • Collaborate within the broader team on the development of tooling and automation capabilities, driving continuous improvement in threat detection and real-time response.
  • Contribute to incident response: triage, investigate, and resolve security incidents, collaborating across security, engineering, data, trust, and product teams.
  • Utilize data extensively to identify opportunities for efficiency gains and workflow automation, spot trends and patterns within the security landscape, and share insights with engineering and product teams to enhance risk management and responsible growth.

Experience You Have

  • Account security, fraud prevention, risk management, or a related field, with a focus on Account Takeover (ATO) and identity-related threats.
  • Leading a large operational team across different time zones, focusing on individual growth, providing feedback, identifying efficiency gains, and unlocking additional value.
  • Acting as the key operational partner to product, engineering, and data teams.
  • Using data to gain insights into business processes and drive improvements and efficiencies.
  • Responding to incidents, conducting retrospectives and investigations, and collaborating with cross-functional partners, specifically within the security or identity space.
  • Working in e-commerce, fintech, or large-scale digital platforms.

It Would Be Great If You Had Experience With

  • AI/agentic tooling (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, etc.)
  • SQL
  • BigQuery
  • Looker Studio
