About the role
About The Role
Our executives speak in their own voice. You're here to help them do it more often and more sharply, as an editor, researcher, and sparring partner. We're looking for a Writer, Executive Communications to help shape and extend that voice across internal and external channels. This role sits at the intersection of executive communications, thought leadership, and content strategy. You'll partner closely with an executive to translate their thinking on commerce, technology, company building, and entrepreneurship into work that advances Shopify's brand.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who loves digging into ideas, partnering with a strong voice, and moving fast on what matters. You'll work directly with executive leadership to extend their voice across internal communications, LinkedIn, social, and other channels, while collaborating with Communications, Brand Social, and other teams to keep messaging coherent at the moments that count.
Responsibilities
- Draft and publish internal communications, including company-wide announcements and executive memos, that land with clarity, authenticity, and impact.
- Develop thought leadership, industry commentary, and engagement posts for LinkedIn that build executive presence and advance Shopify's narrative on commerce, technology, and entrepreneurship.
- Create timely, culturally resonant content for X and other social platforms, reflecting the executive's perspective on tech, internet culture, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
- Partner closely with the executive to sharpen and extend their existing voice across channels, acting as an amplifier and editorial collaborator with a strong point of view on what's working and what isn't.
- Monitor tech news, internet culture, and the entrepreneurial community to spot content opportunities, surfacing angles before they peak and connecting them to Shopify's strategic moments.
- Run a publishing cadence and content calendar across channels, coordinating releases around company milestones, product launches, earnings moments, and external conversations.
- Collaborate with Brand Social, External Communications, and other stakeholders to align executive messaging with broader Shopify narratives and keep signals from conflicting.
- Translate complex topics like products, policy, regulation, and strategic moves into clear, accessible narratives that resonate with diverse audiences without losing the substance.
- Prototype new formats and storytelling approaches, experimenting with emerging platforms to capture attention and drive real engagement.
- Build AI-powered systems for drafting support, monitoring, and audience insights that raise the bar on output without flattening voice, and continuously upgrade your own toolkit.
- Report on content performance through reach, sentiment, and engagement, and use the data to refine strategy and make the case for what's working.
- Navigate reputational nuance with sound editorial judgment, balancing authenticity, strategic objectives, and Shopify's external presence in fast-moving situations.
About You
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with a proven ability to work inside someone else's voice and make it sharper, not smoother.
- 5–8 years of experience in executive communications or content strategy, ideally supporting a C-suite executive, founder, or high-profile leader.
- Deep familiarity with the tech industry, startup ecosystem, and internet culture. You know what's happening, why it matters, and how to turn it into a timely take.
- Strong understanding of LinkedIn best practices, social media dynamics, and what actually makes content perform across platforms.
- Fluency with AI tools and a real point of view on how to use them in editorial work: what they're good for, where they fall flat, and how to build systems around them.
- Ability to simplify complex topics like products, strategy, policy, and regulation into clear, accessible narratives without losing the substance.
- Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail, with the ability to shift between formal and conversational tones depending on context and channel.
- Experience managing content across multiple platforms simultaneously, with a strong sense of cadence, timing, and editorial rhythm.
- Comfort working independently, moving quickly on timely content, and exercising sound judgment without close supervision. You own the quality and success of your work.
- Experience working cross-functionally, building trusted relationships and delivering collaboratively in fast-paced environments where priorities shift quickly.
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders on narrative strategy and coach others toward higher-impact storytelling when needed.
- Located in EST timezone and willing to travel when needed.
Nice to Have
- Previous experience supporting a C-suite executive or founder at a technology company.
- Background in tech journalism, VC communications, or startup marketing.
- Existing network or presence in tech and entrepreneurial communities.
- Experience with Shopify's brand voice, products, and the broader commerce ecosystem.
About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. About You
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone. Before you apply, consider if you can:
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they're built for, and focus on the work only humans can do
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
