About The Role
At Shopify, the Engineering Manager Ruby and Rails Infrastructure drives impact by providing direction, support, and coaching to engineers in the Ruby and Rails ecosystem. As the largest Ruby and Rails shop in the world, this role combines technical expertise with people leadership to scale foundational commerce infrastructure.
About The Team
The Ruby and Rails Infrastructure team ensures that Ruby and Rails remain robust tools for Shopify and the open source community. The team is split into three subteams: Ruby Infrastructure, Rails Infrastructure, and Ruby Developer Experience, all focused on innovation and performance improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a team of 6-12 skilled engineers.
- Solve complex language and framework challenges.
- Collaborate with tech leads for impactful decisions.
- Balance technical contributions with team leadership.
- Coach developers and recruit top talent.
What You Bring
Engineering management experience and deep technical expertise in programming language internals or web framework development are essential. You should be excited about AI's potential to transform coding, and have experience with tools such as parsers, compilers, and web frameworks like Rails. While Ruby/Rails is ideal, comparable expertise in other languages is also valued.
Nice To Have
- Professional experience writing Ruby and Rails code in production.
- Contributions to open-source projects in Ruby or Rails.
- Experience managing remote or globally distributed teams.
- History of technical writing or public speaking on Ruby/Rails topics.
