Job Description

About The Role

Every app that goes live on the Shopify App Store passes through a human. That human might be you. App Review Specialists are the quality bar for an ecosystem that serves millions of merchants and drives billions in revenue. You'll review apps submitted by developers worldwide - evaluating security, compliance, user experience, and listing accuracy against Shopify's published requirements. Your decisions protect merchants from broken installs and bad actors, and they help good developers ship faster by giving clear, actionable feedback when something needs to change.

This is queue-based work. You'll process a high volume of reviews every day. The best people in this role find a rhythm in that - they get fast without getting sloppy, they spot patterns others miss, and they take pride in a clean queue. If you're the kind of person who finds satisfaction in structured, focused work with a clear standard to hit, this role will feel like home.

What You'll Do

  • Review apps against Shopify's requirements. Evaluate things such as OAuth flows, GDPR webhook compliance, Billing API implementation, API permission scopes, security headers, accessibility, and listing content - not by bug-testing, but by systematically checking against published criteria.
  • Test in real environments. Install apps on development stores, use browser DevTools in incognito mode, verify storefront performance with Lighthouse, and confirm billing flows using test charges.
  • Write feedback that ships apps faster. When you reject an app, your written feedback is what the developer reads next. Clear, specific, actionable notes reduce resubmission cycles and earn trust from the Partner community.
  • Identify patterns and escalate. Flag trends in common failures, suspicious submissions, and policy edge cases. Surface insights that help the team improve tooling, documentation, and review criteria.
  • Maintain consistency at volume. Apply the same standard to the first review of the day and the last. Participate in calibration sessions to stay aligned with the team.

What We're Looking For

  • Pattern recognition and attention to detail: You catch what others miss - inconsistencies, gaps, things that don't add up - and you catch them fast. This is the single most important trait for this role.
  • Structured decision-making: You can take a rubric, apply it consistently across hundreds of cases, and know when to make the call vs. when to escalate. Gray areas don't freeze you.
  • Clear written communication: You write concise, specific feedback. You default to helping the developer fix the problem, not just flagging that one exists.
  • Technical literacy: You don't need to write code, but you need to be comfortable with concepts like APIs, OAuth, webhooks, HTTPS, browser developer tools, and permission scopes. You can read documentation and understand what it means for the app you're reviewing.
  • Resilience to repetition: High-volume review means doing similar work across many submissions. You bring the same focus to review #80 as you did to review #1. You find satisfaction in steady throughput and a clear standard.
  • Judgment and integrity: Every review is a decision that affects a developer's business. You take that seriously, stay objective, and apply the criteria fairly.

You Might Have This Background

We care more about your skills than your resume. That said, people who thrive in this role often come from:

  • QA or software testing - you're already trained in systematic evaluation against defined criteria
  • Technical support - you've explained technical concepts to non-technical people and navigated ambiguous problems
  • Content moderation or Trust & Safety - you've made high-volume policy decisions under time pressure
  • E-commerce or Shopify ecosystem experience - you've built stores, worked with merchants, or developed apps and understand the landscape

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with Shopify's platform, Partner ecosystem, or App Store
  • Experience with developer-facing communication
  • Comfort using browser DevTools, Lighthouse, or accessibility testing tools
  • Understanding of GDPR, data privacy principles, or API security concepts
  • Proficiency in multiple languages (our developer community is global)

What This Role Is - and Isn't

This is queue work. Your primary output is processed reviews. There's a queue, and it needs to move. You'll be measured on both speed and accuracy. If that sounds tedious to you, this isn't the right fit.

This is also judgment work. Not every app maps neatly to the checklist. You'll encounter edge cases, creative interpretations of the rules, and submissions that require you to think critically about what the requirements are trying to protect. Rubber-stamping won't cut it.

How You'll Grow

  • Develop deep expertise in app security, compliance, and platform architecture. You'll become the person who knows why the requirements exist, not just what they are.
  • Influence the process. Your pattern observations and escalations directly shape review criteria, tooling improvements, and developer documentation.
  • Build transferable skills. Policy interpretation, technical evaluation, developer communication, and high-volume decision-making under quality constraints are valuable everywhere in tech.

About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About You

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion
  • Put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they're built for, and focus on the work only humans can do
  • Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work
