Job Description
Overview of the Technical Writer Role
Scalence L.L.C. invites a versatile Technical Writer to join their dynamic team. Since 1989, Scalence has been at the forefront of developing technology environments, applications, and tools for clients. This role focuses on significant and innovative projects, allowing you to stretch your creative muscles on impactful issues within the clinical, medical, and healthcare sectors.
This contract position is for 12 months, offering a rate of $45-$50/hr US or $32.97 - $36.35/hr CAN, and is entirely remote for candidates based in the US or Canada.
Initially, you will focus on courseware development, primarily acting as a copywriter, proofreading and simplifying complex technical concepts for a general audience. The role will expand to include documenting client’s customized HL7 FHIR standard, creating internal training materials, and assisting with product writing and configurability, emphasizing the need for adaptable skills for a long-term engagement.
A key area will be documenting the customized aspects of the HL7 FHIR standard, specifically the client’s unique 20% that extends beyond the standard 80% general use case. This documentation is vital for external organizations consuming client’s data model and for internal teams to understand its application. Additionally, you will develop internal courseware to train Scalence employees on the complexities of HL7 FHIR.
Scalence is seeking team members with diverse skills, including platform writing, third-party tool integration, test case creation for configured tools, and course creation for HL7 FHIR.

- Design and organize clear, effective documentation for various system components and products.
- Edit, clarify, and proofread documentation produced by others, providing coaching to non-writers to enhance their writing abilities.
- Collaborate closely with technical teams to establish processes for maintaining awareness and ensuring documentation is consistently added and updated.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience in a relevant field.
- Proven experience in writing technical documentation for product and/or software development.
- Ability to perform effectively both independently and as a collaborative team member.
- Demonstrated experience in writing documentation using markdown format.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working experience with document management systems such as mkdocs, mkdocs-material, hugo, or MDX.
- Familiarity with or experience in FHIR R4 or the OMOP Common Data Model.
- Capacity to manage multiple competing priorities efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Background or experience in healthcare research, clinical informatics, or other regulated fields.
