National Security & Technology Strategy Fellow at Scale AI
At Scale AI, our mission is to develop reliable AI systems for the world's most important decisions. We are seeking a National Security & Technology Strategy Fellow to significantly accelerate and broadly communicate the strategies we pursue. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of geopolitics, national security strategy, and the technology industry, coupled with the ability to lead cross-functional work streams. A proven record of authorship in both academic and mainstream publications is essential. This role demands intellectual agility, initiative, and a strong capability for supporting executives.
Responsibilities for the National Security & Technology Strategy Fellow include strategy development, conducting original research, and helping Scale AI effectively tell its story. This involves devising thought leadership campaigns and then drafting the white papers, articles, briefings, speeches, and op-eds that advance these initiatives.
What You Will Do
- Spearhead original research on how AI will transform our society and reshape the global security landscape.
- Help Scale AI articulate its point of view in an increasingly competitive ideas market by authoring white papers, articles, briefing memos, speeches, and op-eds.
- Embed within product teams and business units to gain a deep understanding of Scale’s technology and its future direction.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to develop our applied AI strategy and lead thought leadership campaigns that advance Scale AI’s ideas and technology.
- Lead cross-functional work streams with Scale AI’s policy, communications, and marketing teams.
- Help manage research and policy partnerships, as well as Scale AI’s policy blog and speaker series.
- Devise plans for Scale AI business units and executives to engage in global debates on AI and security through participation in high-level forums, speaking engagements, media interaction, and meetings with customers and government officials.
What We're Looking For
- A strong background in national security strategy.
- Exceptional skills as an original researcher with 2+ years of experience in government, at a think tank, within the tech industry, or as a strategy consultant.
- A demonstrated track record of published articles, reports, and commentary in academic, policy, and high-quality media outlets.
- Experience leading small teams and managing multiple, complex work streams.
- A history of driving cross-functional and internal strategic alignment.
- Proven track record of successful strategy development.
- Familiarity with AI technologies and their applications in and beyond national security.
- Experience drafting speeches, op-eds, briefings, whitepapers, and strategy documents.
- Ability to travel to Washington, D.C. and internationally in support of Scale AI executives and objectives.
Nice to Haves
- A public profile as a thought leader in technology and national security.
- An active TS/SCI U.S. government security clearance.
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in international relations, security studies, computer science, public policy, political science, law, or a related discipline.
- History supporting a high-ranking government official, globally known thought leader, or Fortune 500 executive.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation packages at Scale AI for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The displayed salary range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries, determined by work location and additional factors such as job-related skills, experience, interview performance, and relevant education or training. Scale AI employees in eligible roles also receive equity-based compensation, subject to Board of Director approval. Benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, retirement benefits, a learning and development stipend, and generous PTO. Additionally, this role may be eligible for a commuter stipend.
For pay transparency purposes, the base salary range for this full-time position in San Francisco, New York, Seattle is $134,400—$193,200 USD. For Washington D.C., Texas, Colorado, the base salary range for this full-time position is $120,750—$174,300 USD.
