Job Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-facing role whose main objectives are to be a trusted scientific partner to key external experts, enhance understanding of product value, gather medical insights, and stay abreast of medical and scientific developments. This role involves executing stakeholder engagement plans, identifying research opportunities, and contributing to Sanofi’s medical strategy.
Main Responsibilities
- Engage external stakeholders on medical and scientific information exchange, exhibiting excellent scientific and clinical knowledge.
- Utilize strong knowledge of relevant diseases, management protocols, healthcare environment, and competitors to articulate product value.
- Establish robust, long-term peer relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and other stakeholder partners.
- Actively engage with stakeholders on medical, clinical, epidemiologic, and scientific topics to advance their understanding of the disease.
- Understand the state of healthcare policies and guidelines as they relate to clinical practices.
- Map, identify, profile, and prioritize stakeholders in line with the therapeutic area medical plan.
- Plan territory and individual stakeholder engagement interactions consistent with the Field Base Medical Activity Plan.
- Attend and establish a Sanofi Medical presence at relevant scientific congresses and symposia.
- Organize educational meetings or local scientific advisory boards when requested.
- Support speaker training to ensure continued scientific support in the field.
- Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information associated with supported products and disease state areas.
- Gather data and generate insights from stakeholder interactions and provide feedback to the organization.
- Recognize and collect feedback/reactions from multiple data sources and various stakeholders.
- Record/report insights and information appropriately, using available mechanisms and tools.
- Critically evaluate published studies and stakeholder interactions to develop key insights.
- Maintain awareness of and assess emerging evidence in the disease area.
- Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, distributing relevant scientific and medical information.
- Facilitate diligence reviews, medical and safety evaluations, product positioning, and lifecycle evidence planning with Commercial Operations, Business Development, Regulatory, etc.
- Contribute to the creation of material for internal and external stakeholders, following Sanofi policies.
- Support evidence-generation activities by aiding in data acquisition and identifying opportunities for further data collection.
- Monitor disease epidemiology and provide support, including protocol development, for various types of studies.
- Identify data collection opportunities during stakeholder interactions and report them using approved processes.
- Maintain awareness of clinical trial activity within the territory and suggest clinical trials sites.
- Respond to unsolicited requests regarding interest in investigator-sponsored studies (ISS) and support ISS submissions.
Context of the job/major challenges
- Operate independently in a remote, non-office-based environment, navigating complex regulatory environments in person and via digital channels.
- Possible substantial travel nationally and internationally.
- Mediate KOLs' complex and controversial opinions versus corporate policy decisions without negatively impacting KOL relationships or medical strategy.
- Ensure regulatory boundaries regarding non-promotional activities are respected vis-à-vis commercial partners.
Scope of Role / Outputs
- Manage a base of 50 stakeholders, developing and maintaining a stakeholder engagement tracking database.
- Territory covers the Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin region.
- Plan day-to-day interactions, including discussion points in accordance with Medical Affairs strategy.
- Establish interaction frequency per stakeholder to ensure objectives are met.
- Accountability for US KOLs with reporting mainly to Medical Affairs.
- Execute defined KOL territory strategy targeted to address diverse stakeholder needs and aligned with company objectives.
- Develop relevant territory engagement plans in line with medical strategy and support team's medical plan execution.
- Use approved scientific data during KOL interactions to advance understanding of the therapeutic area.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a technical, scientific, or medical field (MD, PhD, Pharm D,) preferred, or other Relevant Life Science degree (RN/MS) with Rhinology and/or Gastroenterology Specialty required.
- Must reside in the territory.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to pass a complete background check.
- Responsible for operating a company car safely, complying with company policies and traffic laws.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Medical Science Liaison role, or relevant clinical practice. MSL experience strongly preferred.
- Candidates with relevant Immunology clinical experience in a Gastroenterology clinical environment may be considered.
- Clear understanding of medical practice, clinical decision-making, and healthcare systems related to patient care.
- Ability to interpret key scientific data and translate this information to meet educational and research needs.
- Demonstrated ability to address educational and research needs through delivery of cutting-edge scientific/evidence-based data.
- Understand the design and execution of research studies.
- Exemplary communication and presentation skills.
- Experience in working on multi-disciplinary teams and managing a significant volume of projects.
