About the role:

We are looking for a Mobile Engineering Manager to lead two high-impact mobile pods:

  • Mobile Platform – This pod owns cross-platform strategy, build systems, CI/CD, performance optimization, reliability, observability, and architectural evolution.
  • Mobile Product – This pod focuses on end-customer feature development (e.g., messaging, workflows, dashboards) with high product velocity and quality.

This leader will skillfully balance long-term architectural rigor with near-term product delivery, ensuring Samsara’s mobile apps are scalable and performant while providing intuitive and delightful experiences for customers operating in the physical world.

This role demands strong technical judgment, cross-functional leadership, and the ability to cultivate a culture of engineering excellence. The role reports directly to the VP, Engineering and will support a team of 13-14 engineers.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US or Canada.

In this role, you will own:

Mobile Platform Strategy
  • Defining and evolving the cross-platform strategy (Native vs React Native vs Compose/KMP).
  • Improving build systems, CI times, and overall developer productivity.
  • Establishing performance SLOs for launch time, page load, memory, and crash-free sessions.
  • Driving architectural simplification and reducing technical fragmentation.
  • Introducing AI-assisted SDLC tooling where it can be impactful.
  • Ensuring mobile scalability for IoT-heavy, real-time use cases.
Product Delivery Excellence
  • Leading customer-facing feature development, such as messaging and fleet workflows.
  • Partnering closely with Product and Design teams to deliver high-quality mobile experiences.
  • Balancing feature velocity with the health of the platform.
  • Driving disciplined engineering practices including PR reviews, comprehensive testing, and observability.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
  • Managing approximately 13-14 engineers across two pods.
  • Hiring and retaining high-performing mobile engineers.
  • Developing senior Individual Contributors (ICs) and future tech leads.
  • Building a culture of ownership, accountability, and technical rigor.
  • Coaching engineers to improve their system design and execution skills.
Operational & Execution Excellence
  • Establishing measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as build time, CI stability, crash-free rate, app startup latency, and feature cycle time.
  • Ensuring predictable sprint delivery.
  • Improving incident response and reliability practices.
  • Maintaining high engineering quality standards.

This is not just a people manager role; it is for a technical Engineering Manager who can credibly debate architecture with Staff engineers, understands when to invest in platform versus product, has led large migrations or platform rebuilds, and deeply comprehends both developer experience and customer experience.

Minimum requirements for the role:

Technical Leadership
  • 8+ years of experience in mobile engineering (Android/iOS).
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Deep experience in at least one native stack (Android or iOS).
  • Strong understanding of cross-platform tradeoffs.
  • Experience improving performance (memory, startup, network, UI responsiveness).
  • Familiarity with modern mobile CI/CD systems.
Organizational Impact
  • Proven track record of leading platform modernization initiatives.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience managing multi-team technical migrations.
  • Strong written communication skills (RFCs, technical strategy docs).
Leadership Traits

  • Strong ownership mindset.
  • Bias toward data-driven decisions.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • Balances long-term architecture with short-term delivery.

An ideal candidate:

  • Possesses experience with Kotlin Multiplatform / React Native / Compose Multiplatform.
  • Has experience with AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Holds experience working in IoT or real-time systems.

Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy:

Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We achieve this through a combination of base salary, bonus/variable compensation, and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) awards for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be granted at the time of hire, with additional RSU refresh grants potentially awarded annually.

We operate on a pay-for-performance model, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards, enabling employees to achieve higher market compensation.

The annual base salary range for full-time employees in this position is listed below. Please note that the base pay offered may vary based on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

$142,800—$184,800 CAD
