Job Description

Senior Technical Artist at Room 8 Group

Room 8 Group is an end-to-end strategic partner in external game development. Working across all platforms, we provide creative and technical expertise across game development, technology, art, trailers, and QA for AAA and AA games. Our Game Development team provides comprehensive co-dev and full-cycle dev solutions, across all platforms. We’ve helped make some of the biggest games of the past decade, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and III, and we work with dozens of the world’s biggest publishers and developers.

Through primarily organic growth, we are proudly independent, now home to around 1,100 creatives based in Europe, North America, and South America.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Technical Artist with a strong focus on realistic vegetation to support the development of high-quality natural environments for games. This role bridges art and technology, with an emphasis on building, optimizing, and supporting vegetation systems that achieve a high level of visual realism while remaining performant in real-time. You will collaborate closely with environment artists, engineers, and technical leadership to improve vegetation workflows, solve rendering and performance challenges, and help deliver visually rich game worlds.

Your Superpowers (Qualifications)

  • Professional experience as a Technical Artist, Environment Technical Artist, or similar role;
  • Strong understanding of real-time vegetation rendering techniques;
  • Experience building or supporting vegetation pipelines in game development;
  • Solid shader knowledge (node-based and/or shader code);
  • Strong understanding of lighting systems and how it specifically applies to vegetation;
  • Familiarity with vegetation and procedural tools such as SpeedTree, Houdini, or similar;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively within a remote, cross-disciplinary team;
  • Ability to sync with PST time zone teammates.

Bonus Points (Nice-to-haves)

  • Experience having created environment art content;
  • Experience with Unreal Engine;
  • Experience with large-scale environments, open worlds, and realistic natural scenes;
  • Scripting experience (Python, Blueprint, C#, or similar);
  • Experience supporting realistic or high-fidelity art styles;
  • Shipped titles or production experience on PC or console.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Design, implement, and support real-time vegetation systems for games;
  • Develop and optimize foliage shaders, materials, and wind animation systems;
  • Support environment artists with vegetation workflows, including scattering, LODs, instancing, and impostors;
  • Profile and optimize vegetation for performance, memory usage, and visual consistency;
  • Collaborate with engineers on vegetation-related rendering and tooling;
  • Help define and document best practices for vegetation production and integration;
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to foliage and natural environments.

Why Join Room 8 Group?

Join the team of inspiring game dev professionals, and get even more:
