Job Description
Health Information Specialist II
This role supports a health data exchange platform that enables secure, accessible, and usable health information to inform better healthcare decisions. The Health Information Specialist II position involves managing patient health records and processing medical record requests in a high-volume production environment, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations and organizational policies.
Responsibilities
- Receive and process patient health information requests per organizational and facility policies
- Maintain confidentiality and security of privileged information
- Maintain knowledge of organizational and facility software
- Adhere to Code of Conduct and policies of the organization and customer facilities
- Inform manager of worksite issues and fluctuating volumes
- Assist with additional duties as required
- Apply medical privacy regulations consistently to prevent unauthorized disclosure
- Manage and safeguard patient health records ensuring HIPAA compliance
- Prepare new patient charts, gathering documents from paper and electronic sources
- Assemble accurate and complete medical records in standard order
- Create digital images of paperwork for electronic medical record storage
- Respond to internal and external patient record requests, retrieving and transmitting records appropriately
- Handle inbound and outbound calls
- Assist with patient walk-ins and administrative duties such as faxing, mail handling, and data entry
- Schedule pick-ups as needed
- Assist in training associates in the HIS I position
- Generate reports for manager or facility as directed
- Exceed level 1 productivity expectations outlined for the site
- Participate in project teams and committees to support operational strategies and initiatives
- Act as a lead for staff regarding general questions and assist with new hire and developmental training
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Ability to commute between locations as required
- Willingness to work overtime during peak seasons
- Minimum 1 year of health information related experience
- Meet or exceed organizational productivity standards
- Basic computer proficiency
- Comfortable using phones, fax machines, printers, and general office equipment regularly
- Professional verbal and written communication skills in English
- Detail and quality oriented for accurate and compliant medical records information
- Strong data entry skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to respond to requests in a fast-paced environment
