About the Job
The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) of Central Maryland is seeking a responsible, organized, and solutions-driven Transit Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day operational activities of fixed-route and paratransit (demand response) services. This role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable transit operations in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while maintaining a culture of safety and accountability.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise transit operations staff including Operators, Dispatchers, and Supervisors.
- Manage scheduling, overtime requests, and daily operational activities.
- Provide quality customer service and handle public inquiries.
- Investigate and report on accidents, incidents, and disputes.
- Create and update operational processes and procedures.
- Mediate personnel issues and handle employee relations including discipline.
- Draft correspondence, compile reports, and analyze key performance indicators.
- Collaborate with planning, maintenance, safety, and customer service departments.
- Ensure compliance with Federal, ADA, State/Local Transit Laws and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
- Participate in recruitment, training, evaluation, and development of staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Previous operations management experience in a transit environment.
- High School diploma or GED; 4 years direct supervisory experience in transit.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher with Passenger (P) endorsement and no Airbrakes (L) restriction.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows environments.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Card).
Desirable Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or French.
- Experience in a union environment and familiarity with collective bargaining practices.
Working Conditions
This full-time, exempt position is based at 8800 Corridor Road, Annapolis Junction, MD. The role requires physical activity including outdoor work in extreme weather, extended periods of sitting, multi-tasking in a high-stress environment, and occasional vehicle operation. Applicants must be able to pass a DOT physical as required.
