Job Description
Database Expert at Rackner
We are seeking experienced Database Developers and Database Administrators (DBAs) to design, build, and maintain the data storage and integration components of a mission-critical federal program. This role is crucial for ensuring enterprise databases are well-designed, high-performing, and reliable, supporting the Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) data integration objectives.
Location & Clearance
This position is fully remote for U.S.–Based candidates and requires an active DoD Secret Clearance (or higher).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement robust database schemas and features, including complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and database code aligned with integration requirements.
- Monitor and optimize database performance through systematic query tuning, indexing strategies, and efficient resource management.
- Execute database optimization, performance tuning, and configure high-availability solutions such as clustering and replication (e.g., SQL Server Always On Availability Groups) to support large data volumes and fast query execution.
- Oversee routine maintenance tasks, including backups, recovery procedures, and timely patching.
- Implement and maintain robust disaster recovery strategies and comprehensive backup policies.
- Enforce stringent database security controls, encompassing access management, encryption, and hardening procedures to safeguard sensitive healthcare data.
- Collaborate closely with data engineers and integration developers to ensure database structures effectively support ETL/ELT processes.
- Validate that database schemas align seamlessly with incoming data feeds and ensure smooth operation of interfaces (APIs, queries) used for data integration.
Who You Are
You are an experienced Database Expert with a strong background in enterprise-level database design and administration. You possess extensive hands-on experience with SQL databases as the primary data store and in-depth knowledge of SQL Server features, including Performance Monitor, Query Analyzer, and related tools. You have practical experience with clustering and replication technologies, database replication, load-balancing, and high-availability architectures. Your expertise extends to implementing backup strategies (native SQL or automated solutions), conducting recovery testing, and familiarity with disaster recovery planning and RMF-aligned security controls. Hands-on experience with data integration and ETL tools is also essential.
