About The Role: Senior Product Designer - Design Systems
We are looking for a Senior Product Designer - Design Systems with deep expertise in Design Systems to join our team, starting with a 6-month contract. This is a pivotal role where you will not only lead end-to-end product design for complex areas but also act as the architect of our visual and functional language. You will help us bridge the gap between design and engineering, ensuring consistency and scalability across our platform.
Although we have an office located in downtown Toronto, Canada, we are open to remote work, with candidates based in Europe, and Mexico as well. We prefer candidates who work on Eastern Time.
How you'll make an impact
Our team strongly believes in user-centered design and the power of a unified user experience. As a Senior Product Designer - Design Systems, you will balance business strategy with strong user advocacy to solve complex problems.
Specifically, you will take ownership of the Q4 Inc. Design System. You will move beyond designing components used on single screens to designing the systems, page templates, and patterns that empower the rest of the team to build faster and more consistently in an AI-first development environment. You will lead initiatives without significant managerial oversight, holding partners accountable and driving strategic initiatives that result in significant business impact.
What You'll Do
- Lead the Design System evolution: Own the development and maintenance of our design system. You will create and document scalable UI components, patterns, and guidelines that ensure consistency across the Q4 Inc. platform.
- Execute end-to-end product design: Contribute to the design process from discovery to delivery for complex product areas, acting as the voice of the customer and advocating for systems to build a progressive User Experience (UX).
- Bridge Design and Engineering: Work closely with the product triad (Product Management, Engineering, and Design) to drive continuous discovery and ensure our design system is technically feasible and implemented correctly.
- Define the visual language: Define high-fidelity user interfaces, interactions, and user flows. You will ensure our "UI" is not just beautiful, but accessible and functional.
- Analyze and iterate: Regularly analyze product performance data to inform and prioritize design efforts, demonstrating the quantitative impact of design decisions.
- Research and discovery: Plan and execute autonomous research using multiple qualitative and quantitative methods to validate system components and product features.
- Mentorship and culture: Collaborate with and mentor other designers to enhance team capabilities. You will facilitate workshops that encourage collaboration and support the development of the design team's overall culture.
What does success look like in this role?
- System Adoption: Building a robust design system that is actively used and loved by designers and engineers, reducing technical and design debt.
- Impactful Delivery: Leading projects from conception to completion with minimal oversight, seeing your designs directly translate into improved user satisfaction and product success.
- Operational Excellence: Supporting the entire organization in making data-driven decisions while increasing the velocity of the design team through efficient tooling and systems.
Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in UX design or product design, with a dedicated focus on Design Systems in recent roles.
- Systems Portfolio: A portfolio demonstrating a strategic approach to design systems—showcasing not just the "what" (components) but the "how" and "why" (documentation, governance, and adoption).
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of Figma (specifically auto-layout, variables, and component properties) and Miro.
- Visual Excellence: Strong UI skills with an eye for typography, layout, and colour theory, ensuring the system meets high visual standards.
- Leadership & Communication: Superior communication skills to effectively articulate design decisions to senior leaders and build consensus.
- Process Oriented: Proven experience leading user-centred design methodologies and working in a continuous discovery and Agile environment.
- Self-Starter: You thrive on responsibility and accountability, capable of holding Product Managers and Engineers accountable to requirements and timelines.
Bonus Points
- Experience in the FinTech, SaaS, or Investor Relations industries.
- Working knowledge of HTML/CSS/React (to better communicate with engineers).
- Deep understanding of Accessibility standards (WCAG) and how to bake them into a design system.
- Familiarity with AI-powered products and designing user interactions with AI.
- Experience with Consumer, B2B, and enterprise software design.
