Role Summary: Junior Cloud Operations Engineer
We are looking for a Junior Cloud Operations Engineer to support day-to-day operations of our Microsoft Azure environment across IaaS, PaaS, Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD/VDI), and Identity & Access Management (IAM). This role focuses on monitoring, troubleshooting, routine operational tasks, and executing standard change activities under guidance from senior engineers, while building skills in automation and cloud governance.
Key Responsibilities
Azure Operations (IaaS & Core Services)
- Monitor and support Azure IaaS workloads such as Virtual Machines, VNets, NSGs, Load Balancers, Azure Storage, and backup services.
- Perform routine operational tasks: VM start/stop, resize, disk management, snapshot/restore, basic network troubleshooting.
- Support patching activities and scheduled maintenance windows following defined runbooks.
- Assist with documenting SOPs/runbooks and keeping asset/configuration information up to date.
Azure PaaS Support
- Provide operational support for Azure PaaS services (based on environment) such as App Service, Azure Functions, Key Vault, SQL/Managed Instance, Service Bus, Storage queues, and API Management.
- Assist with deployment verification, basic health checks, and post-change validation.
- Help troubleshoot service availability/performance issues using Azure portal and monitoring tools.
VDI / Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)
- Support Azure Virtual Desktop components: host pools, session hosts, workspaces, app groups, and user access.
- Perform basic troubleshooting for user connectivity/login issues, session performance, profile-related issues (e.g., FSLogix), and printing/redirector issues (as applicable).
- Assist with session host patching, image updates, scaling schedules, and operational checks.
Identity & Access Management (Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD)
- Support user and access administration tasks: group membership, RBAC assignments, access requests, and basic access troubleshooting.
- Assist with MFA/Conditional Access support activities under established policies.
- Support service principal/app registration tasks as needed (with supervision), including credential rotation procedures.
Monitoring, Incident & Change Support
- Monitor alerts and dashboards using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights (as applicable), and ITSM tooling (e.g., ServiceNow/Jira).
- Triage incidents (L1/L2), follow runbooks, gather logs, and escalate to senior engineers when required.
- Participate in change management activities: implementing standard changes, documenting results, and supporting rollback steps when needed.
- Contribute to RCA inputs by collecting evidence (timelines, logs, screenshots, impacted resources).
Automation, Security & Governance (Learning & Execution)
- Execute approved scripts and automation jobs (PowerShell/Azure CLI) to reduce repetitive tasks.
- Apply tagging/naming standards and assist with Azure Policy compliance checks (as guided).
- Follow security best practices for access control, secrets handling, and operational hygiene.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in IT operations, infrastructure support, or cloud support (Azure preferred).
- Basic understanding of Azure fundamentals: subscriptions/resource groups, networking basics, compute, storage, and identity.
- Familiarity with monitoring and troubleshooting concepts (logs, metrics, alerts).
- Exposure to IAM concepts (RBAC, MFA, least privilege) and/or Microsoft Entra ID.
- Willingness to learn Azure Virtual Desktop concepts and end-user support troubleshooting.
- Basic scripting interest/knowledge (PowerShell preferred; Azure CLI a plus).
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow runbooks/processes.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Hands-on exposure to one or more: Azure Virtual Desktop, App Service, Azure Functions, Key Vault, Azure Backup, Log Analytics.
- Experience working with an ITSM tool (ServiceNow/Jira) and following incident/change processes (ITIL familiarity).
- Knowledge of Windows administration basics (RDP, services, event logs, patching).
- Azure certifications (any of the below):
- AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals)
- AZ-104 (Azure Administrator – nice to have/in progress)
- AZ-140 (Azure Virtual Desktop – nice to have)
