About The Role
We are looking for a seasoned editorial professional to lead our news desk, focusing on coverage of US news with a focus on science, environment and feature stories. This role involves overseeing a dynamic team of writers, editors, and social media executives to deliver timely, engaging, and high-quality news content. The ideal candidate will have an interest in science, general awareness of the US news landscape, outstanding editorial judgment, and a background in managing breaking news workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the editorial team to cover stories on science, environment and feature stories in a timely fashion.
- Research and source daily news articles on science, environment, and feature stories.
- Identify compelling story angles and headlines that amplify the performance of the page.
- Assign, review, and edit stories, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and speed.
- Track performance and interpret data to craft a strategy that maximizes page performance.
- Fact-check sources and cite credible scientific journals or institutions.
- Simplify scientific concepts for the average American reader while maintaining factual accuracy.
- Mentor team members and help maintain a high standard of editorial quality.
Requirements
- Minimum 4 years of journalism experience with at least 1 year catering to the American audience.
- Minimum 2 years of editing experience, and at least a year's experience in executing strategy for feature or science articles.
- Experience in managing or mentoring editorial teams (even in a limited capacity).
- Strong command of grammar, news structure, and fact-checking practices.
- Ability to multitask and manage a news desk under pressure.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a digital-first newsroom or online publishing environment.
- Familiarity with using CMS platforms, live news dashboards, and social media tools.
- Comfortable working independently in a remote team and collaborating across time zones.
