Job Description

Summer Internship Journalist

Position Type: Full Time, Temporary (multiple positions)

Location: Remote

The Company

Postmedia is a Canadian news media company representing more than 110 brands across multiple print, online and mobile platforms. Award-winning journalists and innovative product development teams bring engaging content to millions of people every week whenever and wherever they want it. This exceptional content, reach and scope offer advertisers and marketers compelling solutions to effectively reach target audiences. We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join our team.

The Opportunity

Working remotely in one of Postmedia’s newsrooms across the country in almost every province, ideal candidates are graduating students or recent graduates. Enterprising self-starters and team players, they have a sense for stories that resonate with a diverse readership. A key asset is the ability to use digital tools to break and develop stories and ideas. Successful candidates will work to tight deadlines covering a wide range of news and other subjects.

The reporting term is for up to 16 weeks over summer and each intern may be assigned to one of the following newsrooms for that period, based on where the intern is located for the summer: National Post, Financial Post, Vancouver Sun, Edmonton Journal, Calgary Herald, Regina Leader Post, Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, London Free Press, Windsor Star, Halifax Chronicle Herald. Provision may be made by mutual agreement for assignment to other of Postmedia’s newsrooms. Some weekend and statutory holiday work may be included.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop content to engage audiences across several platforms tailored to meet the varying needs of web and mobile audiences.
  • Have story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
  • Use social media and other digital tools to uncover what’s breaking and what readers in real time are talking about which quickly needs attention.
  • Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
  • Work with digital teams to create interactive content, including text, photo, video and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.

Who you are:

  • A graduating journalism school student or graduate, or a candidate from a related field.
  • Newsroom experience is an asset, but you have the ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
  • Flexible to work effectively in breaking news, features and short form, along with non-traditional story formats.
  • Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help by collaborating with colleagues.
  • A digger with natural curiosity, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
  • A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
  • Experience and strength in video, podcast presentation and other digital tools is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.

How to Apply:

If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply with the following information in one document:

  • A cover letter explaining why you are the best candidate.
  • A résumé.
  • Three samples of your best published work, if any (samples should show a range of work and an ability to handle complex subjects).
  • At least two signed references, to be included in your application (please do not send separately as we cannot guarantee that they will be matched with your file).

We thank in advance all applicants for their interest, however only those candidates will be contacted. Only candidates legally eligible to work in Canada will be considered. No phone calls or agencies please.

Compensation:
