Role Summary: Technical Level Designer
The primary objective of the Technical Level Designer role is to create, implement, and maintain system design elements, tools, and workflows for the dedicated level design team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Implementing engaging gameplay scenarios by leveraging existing toolsets to integrate elements such as checkpoints, objectives, enemy spawns, and special events into compelling gaming experiences.
- Collaborating directly with programmers, game designers, artists, and animators to develop essential tools and solutions, manage feature dependencies, foster team cooperation, and contribute to the overarching vision of the game.
- Assisting in the prototyping and production of technical elements for new game features.
- Rigorously testing new features and tools before deployment to the wider team, ensuring they meet departmental requirements.
- Ensuring that Level Designers adhere to official metrics and technical standards.
- Reviewing blueprints created by team members, analyzing them to identify optimization opportunities or reduce the risk of bugs.
- Implementing prefabs that are user-friendly, easily configurable, and adjustable by team members.
- Serving as a technical reference for the team regarding level design, proactively identifying potential risks, and seeking systemic improvements.
- Supporting the department with debugging and bugfixing efforts, and collaborating with other interdisciplinary teams on investigations when necessary.
Qualifications and Experience
Required Experience
- Typically 3+ years of experience, including prior experience in a technical level design or similar capacity.
- Typically at least 1 successfully shipped AAA game on PC or console.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated interest in mentoring or teaching others.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Good understanding of creative and game development processes.
- Proficiency with text-based or visual scripting systems.
- Experience with Atlassian software (JIRA, Confluence).
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with 3D engines (e.g., Unreal Engine).
- Interest in the design of tools and workflows.
- Interdisciplinary experience or a generalist approach.
- Scripting experience with Python or Lua.
- Knowledge of Maya, 3DS Max, or similar 3D packages (strong preference for Maya).
