Research Engineer Position at Penn State University
This full-time Research Engineer role supports the growth of engineering enrollment, research activities, and a new PhD program within the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SSET) at Penn State University.
Position Overview:
- Report to the SSET Director or designee.
- Support faculty, staff, and students in three engineering departments.
- Help plan and implement research projects with specialized equipment.
- Provide training to students in approved research laboratories.
Duties Include:
- Design and oversee engineering research experiments and tests.
- Manage projects ensuring quality, cost effectiveness, and timeliness.
- Build prototypes, perform failure analysis and optimization studies.
- Advise on design modifications and improvements in research processes.
- Assist in writing grant proposals and authoring research publications.
- Maintain and update knowledge on state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
Desired Experience and Skills:
- Knowledge of engineering laboratory operations and experimental R&D environments.
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, 3D printers, automation, data acquisition systems, MATLAB, LabView, and CAD software.
- Demonstrable data analysis and presentation skills.
- Experience in promoting a safety culture is desired.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science (preferably electrical or mechanical) and at least one year of relevant experience.
Additional Information:
- This is a 12-month funded position with potential for continuation.
- Remote and hybrid work approval is not guaranteed.
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.; Penn State does not provide visa sponsorship.
