Volunteer Virtual Classroom Speaker - Light and Sound Engineer/Designer

This volunteer opportunity invites professionals to virtually interact with 1st-grade classrooms within the Kansas City, Kansas School District. The primary goal is to bring real-world application, professional experience, and relevance to the students' current science unit on light and sound.

As a Volunteer Virtual Classroom Speaker - Light and Sound Engineer/Designer, you will engage with multiple 1st-grade classes who are taking on the role of light and sound engineers for a puppet show. Students will be exploring how to use light and sound to design shadow scenery and sound effects for a puppet theater.

Your Role and Presentation Focus

• Introduce the job of a light and sound engineer/designer and what it entails.
• Discuss the path to becoming a light and sound designer, including personal career journey insights.
• Share creative ways to produce light and dark scenery on stage.
• Explain how sound effects are generated in theater.

The session will include a 10-15 minute Q&A segment from the students, who will have just completed their unit and are eager to ask questions. Visual aids and opportunities for student interaction are highly encouraged for this age group. The estimated duration for each session is 30 minutes and will take place in May.
