Post Doctorate Research Associate, Complex Data Models
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the National Security Directorate (NSD) seeks a Post Doctorate Research Associate focused on Complex Data Models. This role is within the AI and Data Analytics Division, which integrates advanced hardware and software to deliver computational solutions for intricate data challenges.

Responsibilities
- Develop and apply advanced mathematics and machine learning techniques to national security research challenges.
- Integrate mathematical concepts such as computational topology, representation theory, geometry, applied category theory, graph and hypergraph theory with machine learning to analyze complex systems, including AI-based systems.
- Create methods for analyzing complex data systems (e.g., knowledge graphs, semantic databases, authorization systems) by combining computational topology, applied category theory, graph and hypergraph theory with machine learning.
- Clearly communicate impactful research findings through technical documents, verbal presentations, and discussions to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD received within the past five years (60 months) or to be received within the next 8 months from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- A strong background in mathematics, evidenced by publications utilizing topology, algebra, geometry, or category theory.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Experience with knowledge graphs and other complex systems data.
- Familiarity with the science of deep learning or mechanistic interpretability.
Additional Information & Requirements
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance, which involves a comprehensive background investigation including employment, education, financial, and criminal history. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, with a strict policy against illegal drug use, including marijuana, for the 12 months prior to the QNSP completion.
