Department Overview
This level 2 coding position supports the Enterprise Coding Department for coding professional and/or facility fees at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The role requires hands-on coding of physician services using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS standards while ensuring compliance with CMS and state specific guidelines.
Function/Duties of Position
Coding: Review clinical documentation (via EPIC) and other sources ensuring compliance with CMS guidelines. Assign proper CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes for professional charges including E&M, diagnostic, and procedural services. Establish and maintain controls for coding and billing processes, monitor compliance with federal/state laws and Oregon Medical Assistance Program (OMAP), and maintain clear communication with leadership and peers. Develop written procedures to enhance billing accuracy and mentor coding staff.
Department Support: Act as a resource for outpatient coding leadership by addressing billing policy issues, attending coding meetings and seminars, and participating in Enterprise Coding education sessions. Collaborate on process improvements and update coding teams with the latest changes in CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and billing laws.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; minimum two years of hospital or professional services experience with ICD-10-CM and CPT coding. Certification through AAPC or AHIMA (e.g., CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT) is required. Active membership in AHIMA may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of an accredited coding program (AAPC Boot Camp or AHIMA Coding Boot Camp), familiarity with OPPS guidelines and CCI edits, experience with EMR systems such as EPIC and 3M encoder, and proficiency with word processing and spreadsheets. Strong communication skills and team collaboration are essential. Must pass an internal coding test.
Additional Details
The role offers flexible scheduling within department core hours (Monday - Friday, 5:00am - 10:00pm) with variable work days including potential rotating weekends. This is a telecommuting position.
