About The Role

OpenAI is seeking a Data Center Structural Engineer with over 10 years of experience. This role is crucial for building advanced AI infrastructure and involves designing and implementing optimized structural solutions for mission-critical buildings and large electrical/mechanical equipment.

The Data Center Engineering team drives infrastructure strategy, technical innovation, and collaborates with research to set performance benchmarks and develop reference designs for rapid, scalable global deployment.

Role Summary

As a Structural Engineer, you will design OpenAI’s data centers from early concept through delivery and provide ongoing operational engineering support. Responsibilities include developing design standards, Owner’s Project Requirements, Basis of Design, overseeing design partners, and ensuring facilities meet rigorous business, technical, and resiliency requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain structural design standards, specifications, and reference models.
  • Lead structural analysis and design for new builds, expansions, and retrofits.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including ME, electrical, and architectural systems.
  • Perform structural load analysis for high-density AI computing environments.
  • Review design deliverables, calculations, and construction documents for accuracy.
  • Provide field engineering support during construction and commissioning.
  • Oversee quality assurance, mitigate risks, and ensure safety standards.
  • Collaborate with vendors on material selection and engineering software tools.
  • Support site evaluations and integrate lessons learned into future designs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in structural design for data centers and large industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, seismic design, and high-load systems.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software.
  • Excellent coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to travel for global project coordination.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in hyperscale data center or high-density industrial design.
  • Familiarity with fast-track design-build models.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
