Job Description

Solutions Engineer, Public Sector at OpenAI

The Technical Success team at OpenAI is dedicated to ensuring the safe and effective deployment of ChatGPT and OpenAI API applications for a diverse range of developers and enterprises. As a Solutions Engineer, you will serve as a trusted advisor, guiding customers to maximize the value derived from our advanced models and products. This role involves helping companies and organizations across various industries implement transformative solutions, including customer service enhancements, automated content generation, and innovative applications leveraging our cutting-edge AI models.

About The Role

We are actively seeking an experienced pre-sales Solutions Engineer to collaborate with our OpenAI for Government sales team. In this pivotal role, you will support government agencies, policymakers, public institutions, and government contractors in harnessing the transformative power of OpenAI’s tools and products. Your expertise will enable public sector organizations to drive innovation, significantly enhance service delivery, and effectively solve complex challenges using artificial intelligence.

You will engage closely with government leaders, civil society organizations, and key stakeholders, building trust and providing essential technical expertise. A core aspect of your responsibility will be ensuring the responsible adoption of AI that aligns seamlessly with public sector needs and priorities. Your contributions will directly advance OpenAI’s broader mission to ensure that AI benefits all of society, with a particular emphasis on public good and policy-driven impact.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and operates under a hybrid work model requiring 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is available for new employees.

In This Role, You Will

  • Deliver an exceptional pre-sales customer experience by providing technical expertise, clearly outlining the value proposition, and meticulously answering product, API, and LLM-related questions.
  • Demonstrate the profound business value of leveraging ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, including building and presenting compelling demos, accurately scoping use cases, recommending optimal architecture patterns, and offering in-depth technical advisory.
  • Create and meticulously maintain documentation, comprehensive guides, and FAQs that address common questions and requirements identified throughout the pre-sales process.
  • Foster strong customer advocacy and effectively represent the voice of the customer internally by gathering and relaying critical customer feedback, identifying recurring themes across customer interactions, and ensuring this input is incorporated into future product planning.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for security and compliance inquiries, explaining standardized collateral, directing customers to relevant resources (such as the trust portal), and escalating complex requirements to specialized teams as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with the OpenAI for Government Go-to-Market, Policy/Global Affairs, and GRC teams to guarantee a seamless and integrated customer experience.

You Might Thrive In This Role If You

  • Possess 7+ years of extensive experience in a technical pre-sales role, with a proven track record of managing C-level technical and business relationships with complex global organizations.
  • Have significant experience working directly with Federal Civilian and/or State & Local government customers.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of IT security principles and customer requirements for technical B2B SaaS products, coupled with experience providing advanced security and compliance support.
  • Have industry experience in programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, and a strong proficiency in working with REST APIs.
  • Have successfully delivered prototypes of Generative AI/traditional Machine Learning solutions and possess solid knowledge of network and cloud architecture.
  • Are an exceptionally effective presenter and communicator, capable of translating complex business and technical topics into clear, understandable language for all audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Embrace full ownership of problems, seeing them through end-to-end, and are eager to acquire any missing knowledge to ensure successful project completion.
  • Exhibit a humble attitude, a genuine eagerness to support your colleagues, and an unwavering desire to contribute whatever is necessary for the team's collective success.

While a security clearance is not mandatory, candidates who currently possess an existing clearance may discover additional opportunities for engagement within this role.
