Job Description
Why nyra health needs you
nyra health possesses a unique and valuable asset: the world's largest labeled dataset of neurological speech. This dataset comprises millions of recordings from patients with conditions such as aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive-linguistic impairments, all meticulously annotated by professional therapists in real clinical settings. As a Machine Learning Researcher, you will harness this unparalleled data to advance the frontiers of AI in neurological rehabilitation. Your work will involve building innovative models for speech recognition, pronunciation assessment, therapy personalization, and clinical decision support—capabilities that are uniquely achievable given nyra health's data.
About nyra health
At nyra health, we are dedicated to developing software that genuinely transforms lives. Our suite of tools supports clinics, therapists, and patients throughout their neurorehabilitation journey. Our flagship products, myReha (a therapy app) and nyra insights (a web platform for patient management and analysis), deliver evidence-based, AI-powered neurotherapy at scale. If our mission resonates with you, we encourage you to connect with us.
What you'll shape
- Speech and language models: Develop and enhance models for neurological speech recognition, pronunciation scoring, and phoneme-level analysis, building upon our proprietary models.
- Clinical AI: Conduct research and prototype models for automated therapy content generation, accurate patient progress prediction, and sophisticated clinical decision support systems.
- Multimodal approaches: Investigate and integrate combinations of speech, text, and behavioral signals to construct richer, more comprehensive models of patient recovery.
- Data pipeline and evaluation: Design robust evaluation frameworks, establish efficient training pipelines, and set rigorous benchmarks for model performance within clinical contexts.
- Publication and collaboration: Actively contribute to scientific publications and engage in collaborative research projects with esteemed academic partners.
- Production integration: Partner with the Engineering team to seamlessly deploy models into our production stack, ensuring reliable and scalable operation both on-device and in the cloud.
- Research direction: Play a pivotal role in defining nyra's ML research roadmap, identifying high-impact opportunities at the convergence of AI and neurological rehabilitation.
What sets you up for success
- AI-native workflow: You instinctively use AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot as an integral part of your daily workflow, enabling faster, higher-quality code development.
- Multi-agent fluency: You are proficient in orchestrating multiple AI agents, chaining prompts, and designing workflows where AI manages complex tasks under your guidance.
- Tooling mindset: You proactively customize your development environment with scripts, automation, MCP servers, and CLI tools, constantly seeking to optimize your workflow efficiency.
- ML research experience: Possess an MSc or PhD (or equivalent practical experience) in machine learning, speech processing, natural language processing (NLP), or a closely related discipline.
- Speech and audio expertise: Demonstrate a strong background in speech recognition, speech synthesis, audio processing, or related areas, with experience in architectures like Whisper, wav2vec, or HuBERT.
- Deep learning proficiency: Hands-on experience with PyTorch, large-scale model training, and contemporary training techniques such as LoRA, RLHF, and distillation.
- Research rigor: A proven track record of scientific publications, significant open-source contributions, or well-documented research projects.
- Engineering skills: Capability to write clean, production-ready Python code, extending beyond mere notebook-based experimentation.
- Evaluation mindset: Experience in designing experiments, defining appropriate metrics, and drawing scientifically valid conclusions from complex data.
Beyond your CV
- Scientifically rigorous: You prioritize accuracy, reproducibility, and honest assessment in all research endeavors.
- Impact-oriented: You are driven by the desire to build and deploy models that deliver tangible, positive impact, not merely achieve benchmark scores.
- Curious and collaborative: You enjoy engaging with clinicians, therapists, and product teams to deeply understand and address real-world problems.
- Self-directed: You possess the autonomy to identify promising research avenues, design experiments, and advance projects independently.
- Passionate about speech and language: You are fascinated by the intersection of AI and human communication, particularly in populations historically underserved by current technology.
