Duties & Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technologist Level III class of positions encompasses the scopes of practice of clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists, and histotechnologists, in accordance with Article 165 of the New York State Education Law and Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law. This role involves performing clinical laboratory work of varying difficulty and/or supervising a major program initiative or activity. All personnel perform related work, as appropriate to area(s) of assignment and licensure.
Under broad latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, the Laboratory Technologist Level III supervises, trains, assigns work to, and evaluates the performance of personnel in a small laboratory or laboratory sub-unit, performing both routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses.
Examples Of Typical Tasks
At this higher level, you will perform and oversee tasks from Assignment Levels I and II, including:
- Performing routine clinical laboratory tests and procedures for diagnosis and treatment on specimens.
- Entering raw data from instruments into computers and accurately recording results.
- Processing specimens and cultures, isolating and identifying micro-organisms, and preparing/examining slides.
- Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, including performing quality control procedures.
- Participating in internal and external quality control and proficiency testing programs.
- Preparing, packaging, labeling, and standardizing laboratory media, reagents, and controls.
- Preparing reports, making chart entries, and maintaining daily, weekly, or monthly data records.
- Overseeing, monitoring, and reviewing the work of subordinate personnel.
- Assisting with complex analyses on laboratory specimens.
- Participating in non-routine testing connected with research programs, making minor modifications compliant with laboratory practices.
- Maintaining laboratory records and preparing comprehensive reports.
- Assisting in on-the-job or classroom training for subordinates and new personnel.
- Reviewing and documenting work performance of subordinates, taking corrective action as needed.
- Ordering and maintaining adequate supplies of media, reagents, and other laboratory necessities.
Duties Specific to Level III
In addition to the responsibilities described above, Level III duties include:
- Maintaining and actively participating in quality control and quality assurance programs.
- Advising staff on appropriate laboratory methods and techniques.
- Overseeing the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Supervising the preparation, packaging, labeling, and standardization of laboratory media, reagents, controls, and specimens.
- Preparing work orders for laboratory repairs.
- Assisting in the development and revision of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Conducting tests and other complex analyses with a high degree of expertise.
- Designing and maintaining charts, logs, and various records.
- Potentially testifying in court or other proceedings as an expert witness.
- Preparing correspondence and comprehensive narrative/statistical reports.
- Participating in or supervising the preparation, administration, and rating of laboratory proficiency test programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
- One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank, in addition to meeting Assignment Level II qualification requirements.
Special Notes
Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State. Candidates with specific cytotechnologist or histotechnologist licenses may only be assigned work appropriate to their license. Clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work across all laboratory disciplines/specialties, including supervising personnel.
