Duties & Responsibilities of a Health System Pharmacist Level III
This position involves professional staff, supervisory, clinical, and administrative work within a pharmacy department, requiring significant independent initiative and judgment. Health System Pharmacists adhere strictly to Federal, State, and local laws, as well as other regulatory requirements concerning pharmacy and institutional practice. All personnel may be required to perform related tasks.
Under administrative direction, and with the broadest latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Health System Pharmacist Level III supervises complex or multiple Pharmacy units, or functions as a specialty clinical pharmacist in a highly-specialized field within a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare setting.
Typical Tasks at Assignment Level I (more responsible level):
- Fills prescriptions and patient orders, resolves therapy discrepancies, and follows up on issues.
- Utilizes clinical data to evaluate physician orders for appropriate therapy.
- Provides and documents drug information and patient counseling.
- Documents interventions, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and medication errors.
- Directs and utilizes personnel including technicians, aides, and clerical staff.
- Assists in monthly inspections of patient care units and the Pharmacy.
- Maintains adequate medication supply in individual work areas.
- Participates in Pharmacy staff in-services and meetings related to Systemwide and/or health care setting programs.
- Operates and troubleshoots automated dispensing systems as needed.
- Advises prescribers on alternatives for non-formulary drugs.
- Utilizes Outpatient and Inpatient computerized systems for entering and accessing patient care information.
- Coordinates and analyzes statistics and/or clinical data.
- Participates in quality management and utilization review programs.
- May coordinate the work of a small group for projects or assignments.
- May participate in the preparation and review of policies and procedures.
- May assist in the development, implementation, and execution of Pharmacy staff training curriculum.
- May assist in the supervision of a Pharmacy unit or function in the supervisor's absence.
Typical Tasks at Assignment Level II (more responsible level):
- Supervises and/or coordinates the operation of a Pharmacy unit or major function.
- Prepares departmental reports, including statistical analyses.
- Develops and implements new processes to improve Pharmacy operations and quality of care.
- Orients new staff members.
- Monitors and evaluates staff performance, initiating disciplinary proceedings when necessary.
- Prepares unit work schedules.
- Ensures staff compliance with regulatory agency and healthcare setting rules.
- Responsible for maintaining adequate medication and supply quantities in the Pharmacy unit.
- Evaluates new FDA-released drugs for efficacy, adverse effect profile, and cost; makes recommendations for formulary additions/deletions.
- Manages medication therapy for patient groups as part of an interdisciplinary team, participating in rounds.
- Coordinates medication use assessment.
- Serves as a professional and technical resource for medical professionals in specialty areas.
Typical Tasks at Assignment Level III:
- Initiates and/or participates in research studies within the specialty area.
- Conducts drug administration aspects of drug research projects and prepares findings reports.
- Provides pharmaceutical education to professional staff through lectures, meetings, or individually.
- Coordinates the activities of other supervisors to integrate functions and staff activity across multiple Pharmacy units.
Minimum Qualifications
For Level I:
- Possession of a valid NY State license to practice pharmacy.
For Level II:
In addition to meeting Level I qualifications:
- Two years of post-licensure experience; or
- Completion of a post-graduate specialty residency or fellowship program; or
- Current Pharmacy Board Certification.
For Level III:
In addition to meeting Level I and II qualifications, an additional:
- One year of post-licensure supervisory experience or specialty clinical experience.
