Original Job Summary

Overview

The Criminalist Forensic Biology role at NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene supports the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in investigating deaths and analyzing forensic evidence. The selected candidate will assist with DNA analyses of biological specimens using state-of-the-art molecular techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in DNA analysis of evidentiary materials such as hairs and body fluids.
  • Receive training in collection, preservation, handling, and receipt of evidence.
  • Participate in staff meetings, conferences, and ongoing training activities.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance and calibration of lab equipment.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff.

Special Requirements

Candidates must submit college transcripts showing successful completion (grade C or higher) in courses covering biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and related subjects totaling nine credit hours. A DNA sample will also be required.

Other Important Information

This is a grant funded position through September 2027 and is identified as essential, possibly requiring 24-hour availability during emergency events. Authorization to work in the United States is required. Final appointments are subject to Office of Management & Budget approval.

Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate in criminalistics, forensic science or related field with varying experience requirements for Assignment Levels I-B to IV.
