Consultant Public Health Nurse
The Bureau of Public Health Clinics (BPHC) is actively seeking a Consultant Public Health Nurse who will report directly to the Deputy Director of Nursing Services. This pivotal role involves providing expert nursing care and consultation within NYC's robust public health framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to the Nursing Code of Ethics, upholding high standards of practice, and promoting a safe, ethical work environment while demonstrating compassion and respect for every individual.
- Champion the rights, health, and safety of patients through proactive advocacy and protection.
- Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care within BPHC clinics, encompassing patient support, assessment, medication administration, and comprehensive education on various diseases including, but not limited to, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, Monkeypox, and tuberculosis.
- Provide essential patient care for medication abortion services, which includes rotating between direct clinic care and the Telemedicine hotline to address inquiries and provide medical and gestational age triage.
- Conduct brief yet sensitive problem-focused medical interviews, incorporating sexual history and questions regarding sexual orientation, and accurately obtain demographic data for all patients.
- Actively participate in crucial outreach programs, such as TB testing events, HIV education initiatives, health screenings, and point-of-dispensing (POD) operations to support emergency response efforts, including those related to COVID-19.
- Determine patient care needs based on chief complaints, symptoms, medical history, and test results.
- Educate patients on clinic flow basic protocols, available medical and behavioral services, confidentiality, and partner services.
- Prepare and provide hard copies of intake forms for review by clinicians, counselors, and social workers, and accommodate partner-related concerns when necessary.
- Perform case-finding activities, offering counseling, referrals, and follow-up on cases.
- Serve as a health consultant to other professionals, paraprofessionals, and the broader community.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates for the Consultant Public Health Nurse position must meet the following criteria:
- A valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse.
- A baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college.
- A master’s degree from an accredited college in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field.
- Two years of relevant experience in public health or hospital nursing within fields such as mental hygiene, communicable diseases, child health, school health, hospital services, rehabilitation, and/or nursing education.
- One year of the required experience must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, or educational capacity.
- Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and/or experience to the above is acceptable. However, all candidates must possess a valid New York State Registered Nurse license, a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college, and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, or educational experience as described.
