Job Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Northwell Health is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for a Medical-Surgical unit. This role involves providing direct patient care, collaborating with healthcare teams, and utilizing leadership skills to manage patient care and direct unit activities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assess patients' physiological health status, including gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological systems.
  • Determine mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition, adjusting the plan of care as needed.
  • Assess and manage patient pain levels.
  • Communicate and document patients' physiological health status and plan of care.
  • Assess patients' psychosocial health status, including their perception of care and coping mechanisms.
  • Identify cultural and ethnic requirements to ensure patient satisfaction and reduce anxiety.
  • Communicate and document psychological status and care plan.
  • Identify patient outcomes and develop criteria for measurement.
  • Identify actual and potential patient problems and needs for teaching based on assessments.
  • Develop patient outcome statements and establish individualized patient goals.
  • Formulate the plan of care and establish priorities to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Coordinate the cost-effective use of resources to achieve outcomes.
  • Document the plan of care and collaborate with physicians and other health team members.
  • Implement the plan of care, ensuring safety precautions are followed.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and medications correctly and safely.
  • Reassess patients as needed and revise the plan of care.
  • Make accurate observations of patients' conditions and report/record them appropriately.
  • Keep accurate documentation of patient treatment, activity, condition, and responses to interventions.
  • Act rapidly and effectively during emergency situations.
  • Provide a calm and restful atmosphere and communicate effectively with patients' families/caretakers.
  • Participate in discharge planning and coordinate referrals.
  • Provide discharge instructions to patients and significant others.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care provided and document outcomes.
  • Perform variance analysis for performance improvement.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate systems to improve care in the unit.
  • Collaborate with other care team members and physicians on the plan of care.
  • Accurately interpret and implement physician's treatment regimens.
  • Assist physicians during treatments and diagnostic procedures.
  • Keep the Patient Care Manager and/or physician informed of changes in patients' conditions.
  • Delegate assignments to support staff and ensure completion.
  • Perform preventive skin care measures, apply dressings using aseptic technique, and perform irrigations.
  • Administer medications correctly, identifying medication action, dosage, side effects, and implications.
  • Educate patients and significant others regarding medications and food interactions.
  • Participate in patient and family education, recognizing and utilizing teaching opportunities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and document outcomes.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Physical Demands

Constant standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching, lifting, pulling, pushing, and turning. Frequent lifting of objects from 10 lbs to 150 lbs. Pushing objects up to 200 lbs. Occasional sitting. Lifts with assistance objects greater than 150 lbs. and carries objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Job Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing preferred. Must be enrolled in an accredited program within 24 months of employment, if hired after September 1, 2010 and obtain a BSN degree within five (5) years of employment date.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • BCLS, ACLS, preferred.
