Registered Nurse ICU
Northwell Health is seeking a Registered Nurse for the 5C ICU unit. This role involves providing age-specific care using the nursing process, collaborating with healthcare professionals, and utilizing leadership skills for patient care coordination. The Registered Nurse will be responsible for assessing patient health status, developing and implementing care plans, and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct patient interviews, explain procedures, and answer questions courteously.
- Assess gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological health status.
- Determine mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition to adjust care plans.
- Assess level of pain and manage pain effectively.
- Communicate and document patient's physiological health status and plan of care.
- Assess patient's psychosocial health status, including perception of care and coping mechanisms.
- Identify cultural/ethnic requirements to ensure patient satisfaction.
- Communicate and document psychological status and care plan.
- Identify patient outcomes and develop criteria for measurement.
- Identify actual/potential patient problems and patient's need for teaching.
- Develop patient outcome statements and establish individualized patient goals.
- Identify care activities and establish priorities to achieve expected outcomes.
- Coordinate cost-effective use of supplies, equipment, and medication.
- Document the plan of care and collaborate with physicians and other health team members.
- Implement the plan of care, ensuring safety precautions are followed.
- Reassess patients as needed and revise the plan of care.
- Administer prescribed treatments correctly and use necessary equipment safely.
- Provide emotional support to patients and significant others.
- Apply scientific principles safely, timely, and efficiently during procedures.
- Make accurate observations of patient's conditions during treatments and report/record them.
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient's treatment, activity, and condition.
- Act rapidly and effectively during emergency situations.
- Provide a calm and restful atmosphere for patients.
- Communicate effectively with patient's family or caretakers.
- Participate in discharge planning and coordinate referrals.
- Provide discharge instructions to patients and significant others.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care provided and document outcomes.
- Perform variance analysis for performance improvement.
- Design, implement, and evaluate systems to improve care in the unit.
- Collaborate with other care team members in planning and carrying out treatment regimens.
- Provide direction to other members of the care team.
- Accurately interpret and implement treatment regimens as prescribed by the Physician.
- Assist the Physician during treatments and/or diagnostic procedures.
- Keep Patient Care Manager/designee and/or physician informed of patient's condition changes.
- Use clinical judgment in delegating assignments and ensure timely completion.
- Perform grade I-IV Decubitus Care and preventive skin care.
- Apply simple dressings using aseptic technique.
- Apply warm and cold compresses and perform irrigations as per facility procedure.
- Administer medications correctly and safely, understanding their action, dosage, and side effects.
- Meet standard on medication administration examination.
- Demonstrate preparation of local solutions.
- Educate patients and significant others regarding drug and food interactions.
- Participate in patient and family education, explaining conditions and resources.
- Recognize and utilize health teaching opportunities and materials.
- Provide early discharge planning and appropriate referrals for post-hospital care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and document same.
Job Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferred.
- Must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two (2) years and obtain a BSN Degree within five (5) years of job entry date.
- Current License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required.
- Critical Care Experience 5-10 Years, Preferred.
- Specialized certifications, as needed.
