Job Description

Registered Nurse Emergency Department

Performs an age specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Collaborates with physicians and other health team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and treatments. Uses leadership skills/clinical judgment in coordinating patient care and directing/delegating activities of the patient care unit team.

Job Responsibility

  • Conducts patient interviews, explains policies and procedures, reviews patient charts, and answers questions.
  • Assesses gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological health status, determining mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition.
  • Assesses level of pain and pain management, and communicates/documents patient’s physiologic and psychosocial health status.
  • Identifies patient outcomes, develops criteria for measurement, and establishes individualized patient goals.
  • Implements the plan of care, maintains constant vigilance over patient safety, and reassesses patients as needed.
  • Correctly administers prescribed treatments and medications, providing emotional support to patients and significant others.
  • Carries out procedures safely, timely, and efficiently, making accurate observations and reporting same as appropriate.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of patient’s treatment, activity, and condition, and acts rapidly and effectively during emergencies.
  • Provides a calm atmosphere, communicates effectively with families, and participates in discharge planning and referrals.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of care provided, performs variance analysis for performance improvement, and designs systems to improve care.
  • Collaborates with other care team members and physicians on the patient’s plan of care.
  • Assists physicians during treatments and diagnostic procedures, and keeps the Patient Care Manager abreast of changes in patient condition.
  • Delegates assignments, performs Decubitus Care, and performs preventive skin care measures.
  • Applies dressings, warm/cold compresses, and performs irrigations.
  • Administers and documents medications correctly, educates patients and significant others on drug and food interactions.
  • Recognizes and utilizes health teaching opportunities and evaluates the effectiveness of teaching.
  • Performs related duties as required.
