Job Description

Manager of Campaigns at New Roots Institute

What would it mean to dedicate your time, talent, and energy to creating a more just and sustainable food system?

New Roots Institute is a growing nonprofit dedicated to ending factory farming by empowering the next generation of advocates. Our fellowship programs train students to lead real-world campaigns that create structural and behavioral change in their communities.

We’re seeking a passionate and experienced Manager of Campaigns to join our team and help us deepen our impact.

Is New Roots Institute the right place for you?

  • Make a difference and work hard: We value impact and possess the resilience and determination to excel in fast-paced, demanding roles.
  • Question biases and adapt: We seek self-aware individuals who can put ego aside to achieve shared goals.
  • Results-oriented excellence: We strive for excellence and expect never to miss deadlines.
  • Honest and direct feedback: Our culture thrives on constructive feedback for personal and professional growth.
  • Proactive communication: Remote work requires quick responses and effective updates to build trust.
  • Enjoy working together: We find ways to have fun despite the challenging nature of our mission.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Lead the Campaigns team in supporting New Roots Institute fellows to design, launch, and advance effective advocacy campaigns on their campuses and in their communities aligned with our mission to end factory farming.
  • Own the overarching Campaigns strategy, ensuring fellow-led campaigns are well-scoped, feasible, and aligned with organizational goals, theory of change, and fellow learning outcomes.
  • Manage and mentor Campaigns staff, providing clear direction, coaching, and accountability to ensure strong performance, growth, and consistent support for fellows.
  • Set the strategic direction for campaign partnerships, and lead the team responsible for partner selection, onboarding, and long-term collaboration with campaign advisors to expand fellow opportunities and strengthen collective impact.
  • Develop and steward the campaign curriculum and training approach, ensuring fellows build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to be effective advocates.
  • Set the vision and strategy for campaign systems, processes, and infrastructure, and lead the team responsible for their ongoing development and continuous improvement to enable effective campaign execution, tracking, and evaluation.
  • Work cross-functionally with marketing & communications, research & data, development, career pathways and other teams to ensure campaigns are integrated into the fellow experience and broader organizational strategy.
  • Adapt campaign strategy and support approaches based on campaign outcomes, data, fellow feedback, and retrospectives — using insights to strengthen impact and continuously improve systems.
  • Communicate campaign progress, outcomes, and learnings to internal stakeholders, contributing to organizational learning, decision-making, and storytelling.

What We’re Looking For

Required Skills & Experience
  • Experienced in managing people, with at least 3+ years supervising direct reports and a demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and support high-performing teams.
  • Experienced in campaigning, issue advocacy, or related work, with a track record of contributing to, guiding, or overseeing advocacy efforts in a mission-driven context.
  • Highly skilled in project and program management, with a strong track record of planning, coordinating, and executing complex, multi-stakeholder work from start to finish.
  • Proficient in systems thinking and strategic execution, with a track record of building or improving processes that enable teams to carry out complex work effectively and consistently.
  • Brings strong curiosity, open-mindedness, and creative thinking, with a willingness to question assumptions and experiment with new approaches in pursuit of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Brings either existing knowledge or a strong commitment to quickly building knowledge about the anti–factory farming movement, and to developing strong relationships with key organizations and leaders.
  • Passionate about developing emerging student leaders and supporting them to take meaningful, values-aligned action.
  • Able to collaborate and communicate effectively across teams and with external partners, navigating complexity, feedback, and competing priorities with clarity and care.
Other Requirements
  • Shared vegan and anti-speciesist values; no team member consumes animal products or believes animals are resources.
  • Ability to attend the annual in-person team meeting, typically in the first full week of June (Monday through Friday).
