Job Description
About NeedTech Labs
We’re building a software-only scheduling engine that makes compute performance predictable and energy-efficient under cache contention. Our core idea combines cache-access telemetry with latency-sensitivity profiling to classify workloads and co-dispatch compatible jobs, reducing cache interference while optimizing throughput, SLA compliance, and energy proportionality. Our targets include Kubernetes/cloud-native, HPC, and edge environments.
Your Role as Founder & CTO
We’re looking for a Founding CTO & Systems Co-Founder with strong technical vision, capable of delivering an MVP within approximately 12 months. This is a highly hands-on, deep systems role encompassing architecture, prototyping, measurement, optimization, and establishing early customer-facing technical credibility.
What You’ll Do
- Define the end-to-end technical roadmap from architecture to MVP and early pilots.
- Build a vendor-agnostic solution, potentially including a scheduler plugin, runtime component, and/or Linux kernel module.
- Design telemetry pipelines utilizing performance counters and energy metrics, ensuring low overhead and high fidelity.
- Develop workload classification and multi-objective optimization strategies (latency, throughput, energy, SLA).
- Validate solutions on representative workloads such as cloud multi-tenant pods, HPC kernels, and edge inference/control.
- Lead early IP/patent strategy, including claims framing, invention capture, and technical defensibility.
- Recruit and lead early engineering talent as NeedTech Labs grows.
What We’re Looking For
- 10+ years in systems software with deep expertise in Linux internals (kernel, perf, sched, cgroups, eBPF or adjacent technologies).
- Demonstrated experience in performance telemetry, profiling, and optimization, extending beyond mere dashboards.
- Solid grounding in optimization and algorithms (heuristics, search, multi-objective optimization).
- Proven “zero-to-one” capability: a history of shipping, iterating, and making critical technical decisions under uncertainty.
- A clear communicator who can translate deep technical concepts into credible product direction.
- Must be based in Canada.
Ideally, You’ll Also Have
- HPC experience: familiar with MPI workloads, job schedulers, and performance engineering.
- Edge systems experience, including real-time constraints and energy-aware scheduling.
- Prior patent contributions or published systems work.
- Experience working with hyperscaler/infra buyers or platform teams.
What You Get
This role offers significant equity and full partnership potential. A base salary will activate post-funding only.
