About the Graduate Internship – Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis of Power Systems

Join NREL in Golden, CO, and work with world-class scientists, engineers, and experts to accelerate energy innovation. This internship provides hands-on experience in power systems modeling, simulation, optimization, and control, particularly focusing on renewable integration challenges in inverter-dominated systems.

Role Overview

The intern will work in the Grid Automation and Controls group developing inverter-based resources and adjustable speed pumped storage hydro models. You will conduct renewable integration studies to assess the impact of new technologies on grid stability and contribute to high-impact research papers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop inverter-based resource models in commercial software.
  • Conduct renewable integration studies for grid stability analysis.
  • Contribute to or lead research paper writing.
  • Collaborate with industry, utility partners, and NREL researchers.

Qualifications

Applicants must be a full-time graduate student or recently graduated with a solid foundation in power system modeling, dynamics, and control. Knowledge of renewable dynamic modeling or power market optimization is preferred. Proficiency in PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, or Powertech tools is required.
