Position Overview
The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic legal defense office in the South Bronx – seeks an experienced administrative professional to lead the programmatic administrative support team as the Associate Director of Administration.

Founded in 1997, The Bronx Defenders is a public defender nonprofit that uses a nationally recognized holistic defense model. They provide teams of lawyers, social workers, and advocates to defend clients in court while addressing underlying systemic issues. The organization defends nearly 20,000 New Yorkers annually in various legal proceedings and partners with communities for lasting systemic change.
Responsibilities
- Leadership & Supervision: Hire, train, and supervise administrative staff supporting three practice areas.
- Manage day-to-day operations including case intake and workflow coordination.
- Develop internal systems for tracking legal cases using case management software.
- Cover court shifts and intake when necessary, including evenings and weekends.
- Evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback to support growth.
- Coordinate meetings to review workflow and troubleshoot practice issues.
Practice Coordination
Create and implement plans to ensure quality case entry and conflict check processes. Collaborate with supervisors to support work-product quality and monitor program deliverables for funder compliance.
Programmatic Reporting & Data Management
Lead the reporting process for designated practices by reconciling data daily, weekly, and monthly and producing regular performance reports for funders and executive leadership.
Qualifications
- 7 years of legal administrative experience with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
- Experience in legal administrative support for multiple teams in nonprofit or public defense sectors.
- Proficiency with case management systems and accurate intake procedures.
- Ability to engage with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically marginalized communities.
- Strong multitasking, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven record in supervising and mentoring teams with strategic management skills.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $100,000 to $120,000 annually, with eligibility for comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, a 403(b) plan, and generous leave policies. Note: This role is not part of the bargaining unit.
