Overview
The National Geographic Society is seeking a Coral Reef Ecologist, Research, Pristine Seas to conduct high-impact scientific research and support marine conservation. This fixed-term role runs through December 2030 and is focused on advancing the Pristine Seas mission via coral reef research, expeditions, and scientific reporting.
Responsibilities
Data Analysis and Reporting (50%): Collaborate with international scientists to create high-impact publications, lead production of scientific papers and expedition reports, present at conferences, and disseminate findings to diverse stakeholders.
Marine Expeditions (40%): Lead coral taxonomy surveys, plan and participate in 1-2 expeditions annually, and assist with data collection and science plan development in the field.
Policy Activities (5%): Prepare briefings, presentations, and policy documents in support of Pristine Seas.
Programmatic Activities (5%): Work with Communications and Education teams to disseminate research, develop educational products, and support administrative needs.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include 10+ years of marine science experience, an extensive publication record, expertise in coral reef ecology, and proven leadership in both field research and data analysis. A Master’s is preferred while a PhD in Marine Biology along with post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred. Advanced scuba certification with at least 500 dives is essential.
